I have several cords of wood stored at a friends about ten minutes away. His wood is always hastily stacked on pallets and covered with tarps. I like looking a wood stacks, but his are "not pretty"! He got me into a good wood score that yielded 7+ cord starting last November and finished end of August, plus he lets me store wood there so i offered to build one for him. Ive scrounged enough material to build most of it at minimal cost out of my pocket. Spent a few hours setting blocks. Back row not done yet in this pic. Notice his hodge podge of tarps in the back. Id like to get him on the three year plan, but he doesnt work like i do making firewood. Floor framed from pressure treated 2x10' that i got for 90% off. 2x10 joists on every bearing point. The other "field" floor joists will be either 2x6 or 2x8. The deck boards are reclaimed 2x6's scrounged from a job i did. The guy had ripped them up himself and was going to cut up and throw away. Only some peeling stain and good meat still so flipped upside down. He even pulled all the old nails. I had originally planned to use pallets over the framed floor, but opted for the 2x6's. Everything is screwed together so far. Cut and set the 8 posts on Tuesday. Reclaimed 4x4's from another freebie score. The one rafter was loose to give me an idea of roof pitch/overhangs. Floor is 4' wide and roof panels will be 6' wide. About 12-16" off grade to save the back when starting to stack. About 6'4"-6'8" from grade to carrying beam (not up yet) for head clearance. At least 3' clearance from the woods so accessible from both sides with tractor/wheelbarrow. Much easier to rotate stock. I will post more pics as the build continues. Stay tuned.
Nice. Not sure what the soil is like there...but do you think the blocks will sink into the ground on the loaded side of the block in the spring when the ground is super soft?
Lowes...clearance. I have a contractor who i work with PT as he is retired but still works PT. I have a truck with racks...he doesnt. We we're building a shed at his rental property and went to Lowes to PU some material. Lowes had units of returns and culls at 90% off!!! WooHoo. We hit the jackpot! I got 46' of knotty cedar 1x12 for FREE! Guy couldnt find SKU and said to just take it. Pictured are the 10'ers one 16' not pictured. the sticker from 2x12x20' We got 16 foir the price of one. Been utilized in the shed and for an add on at his daughters in MA. listed as 18' but were 20'. I was practically doing cartwheels in the parking lot. He wasnt but i convinced him to buy them. I went the next day and got another batch of assorted 2X lumber and a box of blue vinyl siding which we sided the shed with. (next pic) Paid $2 each vs. $11 for the siding pieces. Had to order another box but still great value. There was another few 20' 2x12's and i wish i had grabbed those too. Unit of 8' 4x4's for a buck each too. Didnt grab those. I have a lot of hoarded assorted boards and lumber and these wouldve been tough to store. The leanto build has claimed a lot of it. I have some of the remnants stored in his barn. Lowes will strap together "cull packs" and sell for pennies on the dollar. Just a matter of timing when im there.
It is a concern of ours hence the 14 blocks. I set them so the full 8x16" face is bearing vs. the "profile" of the block. The water table is high there so the ground is softer. A few i had to remove some sod/dirt to get it pretty level. Only 2x10 and 2x4 beams plus 2x4 rafters. Roof strapping will be 1x4 and 1x6. Roof panels are aluminum. The structure itself isnt that heavy. We will find out once he has wood in there. I can always lift settled area (when empty) and block it with 1x or 2x's
Its 4'x36' and stacked at 5' high it will hold rough 5 1/2 cord. The two dividers will be a few inches each so a small deduction. He wanted to have four bays but with the lumber i had on hand the lengths wouldnt have worked and i dont want to pay full price for any additional materials. He will be filling it and doesnt "jigsaw puzzle" stack like i do! I cut 75% of his wood and i think he likes my 16" lengths. Another friend of his drops off an occasional load and its cut like tree service wood. Every length but the right one!
the woods behind him and the neighbor have over a dozen standing dead white oaks. BIG ones. Gypsy moth kill off. He will make access trails. I will fell and buck and maybe split some. He removes and stacks...well that is the plan for the Winter. We have taken a few already. Pics will be posted in future threads.
