Last night, had first fire of season. I burned mulberry, love that stuff. Wood is a deep burnt orange color. Sparks/pops a lot.

I am in the oil business. Yeah, yeah, throw rocks at me, lol. Anyway, crude oil is a truly amazing substance. Aside from the bazillion uses of it for various things, just think of it as a fuel. One gallon of gasoline can get you and your 4,000 lb pickup, oh, 15 miles down the road, carrying a load of wood, and fast. That is one AMAZING substance!

Wood is the same. Well, not the same, but pretty amazing! As the fire burned, and it burned great, as it's from about a 4 years old stack, it struck me how incredible a piece of wood is. The energy from that roaring fire. It was a solid hour until the dang fire made any coals! Wow! That is incredible to produce all that heat/flame just sitting there burning. Hopefully, you catch my drift, as we used to say, lol.

Yes Bill, it is incredible. I'll never cease to be amazed. Oil indeed gives us many things and so do trees. Many things besides heat.

Being in the oil business, I have a question for you.

We have fuel oil as a backup. We haven't taken an oil delivery for a few years. Should we use the oil furnace, just to use the oil and get a fresh delivery? I'm reading the number 2 fuel oil is OK to store for up to 2yrs. Is it still OK beyond that?

Mike I don't know a thing about fuel oil, I am in the oil and gas exploration/production business, drilling and producing oil/gas wells. Plus, I live in the deep south and we don't what fuel oil is, lol.

I imagine its similar to diesel, and can grow algae after a period of time. That is just a guess tho

Yes, it can grow algae...there are a number of products that are made to preserve the fuel and prevent algae growth...I use Startron diesel additive in mine...so far so good.

If only wood alcohol were more yielding for a possible resource for oil replacement. Taking the stuff out of the ground is only rest assured that we will never get back. If wood can produce that kind of heat, surely it would be able to get cars rolling.
I’m aware of the truck on one of those shows they had, think the man who helped one passed away a few years back but they figured out how the wood alcohol would make his tiny truck run. The technology would be great being a zero carbon resource.

Definitely. A completley renewable energy source that is technically 0 carbon emission since the wood contains the carbon, the tree it came from which lived and absorbed that carbon during its lifetime and its released back into the carbon cycle to be reabsorbed via the cycle again and again. And its cool to be the one to collect and utilize its energy for your family to benefit from.
    Other words ditto! Lol

Einstein said one pound of equall mass of any kind of matter if converted into energy at 100 percent eff., could power a large city for a year. Or something like that, honey get me some more jackn coke.. thanks,

Supposedly twice the volume of methanol is required as fuel compared to gasoline.
Methanol is used in race car engines for safety reasons and the high output power.
Race cars don't have to pass a NOx emissions test either.
It can be pretty cheap to produce though from coal or natural gas as a feedstock.

Seems to me, at the time the decison was made regarding methanol vs ethanol to add to gasoline natural gas prices were high and corn was cheaper.
If that choice was made today we'd probably have M15 and M85 fuels vs E15 and E85 fuels.
