Grabbed this stuff after work, I cut into a couple rounds but chain sagged fast and being forgetful of tools is on me!! Ugh oh well. Loaded what I could. Now Hauling it home and calling it a day. Lady said it fell in a wind storm some 9 months ago and neighbor with some heavy machinery helped her get this down the driveway. Been sitting ever since. Yay some bbq wood! I love plum for chicken and pork but it’s good for everything, much like apple.
I first read the title as Plum RUM. Didn't sound gooder at all, and I like plums.......and Rum. That's one gnarly tree.

I cut one round out of this thing...it stopped my splitter the first time. Plum is as twisty as they get. It does not split straight, almost as if I’m using some corkscrew splitting ram.
Normally if I cut any apple fresh, it’s likely a solid year if not two. That being said I haven’t had fresh apple for awhile. Most of the stuff that I do get is wind- blown or it died and someone else cut it up. Plum seems to dry quickly but I’ve cut and split it smaller as T.Jeff Veal recommended so that seems to help a lot. Sorry I wish I could send some down for some smoking for ya. This isn’t wood I find in bbq stores. I’m somewhat shocked, it’s a great wood to use, the flavor is very mild and tasty. I wonder why the market for this stuff is low or they sell it elsewhere but I never find it near me as far as a bag of chips or chunks. Again, this is my main reason for seeking this out. I don’t let it go if I see it near me. Unfortunately I couldn’t bring the whole thing home. Left one long log there in the back 1st picture and then same log is the cool “butt” cut in the 3rd. If I say what happened is this tree was beginning to die off and weaken, it split at that spot directly in half. I managed to get the other half of it in the trailer but that log was just too much. I do get the opportunity to get back there.
Go back and cut that last piece. Get it home. Hey, I have an idea. Post office has those flat rate boxes. buZZsaw BRAD and I can send you our addresses...I sent a 39# box of wood board pieces for a friend in Idaho to make knife handles from.
It seems that most all fruit wood is very gnarly. Nice score. I can check on the MC of apple that I got a year or so ago. I split it and stacked it and left it to season. I ran into it today. I'll check on the MC tomorrow.
I’ve never burned crabapple you say you recently got from my experience...I doubt it’s too different. Hope it works for ya. I love getting apple and taking my chop saw to limbs no more than a couple of inches wide and maybe about an inch or so thick cookies. Perfect pucks.
Sounds good, but I need to get a smoker grill. Don't have one yet. We have pecan, cherry and hickory down here.
Is there any difference in the wood of ornamental crab apple trees and crab apple trees grown for fruit?
Hopefully Horkn might know. But Apple being great wood to use regardless isn’t usually species dependent. Much like cherry, you don’t really have much difference in fruiting and non fruiting. Just the difference is male to female types of tree if that.
