TONIGHT! 5/23 Meteor Storm???

From the website: It's something old creating something new: On late Friday night into Saturday morning, North America will likely see a brand new meteor shower called the Camelopardalids - with a compelling chance that these gentle shooting stars could become a torrential meteor storm and provide quite a light show.

These new meteors are dusty remnants of Comet209P/LINEAR, discovered in 2004.

"The general consensus is that this week's Camelopardalids will be comparable to a very good Perseid meteor shower with an added possibility of a storm," says Geoff Chester, astronomer at the U.S. Naval Observatory. "I'm planning to be out watching."

With clear skies, sky gazers may see meteor activity late Friday night - at about 10:30 p.m. - according to Bill Cooke of the Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Ala. Astronomers predict the peak will occur from 2 to 4 a.m., Eastern Daylight Time, on Saturday morning, but Cooke believes gazers can catch shooting stars all the way through dawn, when the sunrise washes them out.

I wonder if they will be viewable here? We are getting to the point where it doesn't get completely dark at night.

 

Looks like it will be pretty Dark after 10 tonight, but you will likely have some cloud cover causing issue.

 

I was in Iceland a week ago and it didn't get dark. It is pretty strange thing if you have never seen it before. When the sun did go down it was east of magnetic north which had me a bit baffled also.

 

Thanks for the heads up Adam we went out to look and didnt see anything It was clear for a little bit but clouds and lighting rolled in fast oh well maybe another time. Every time theres something going on in the sky its cloudy

 

Completely over cast here. Kinda sucks too because I'm working tonight and this would have worked out perfect.

 

Not much activity that we saw, it's still amn hour before the peak. The few we saw were impressive.

 

That is for Arkansas. I live in Alaska! We have about 21hrs of daylight. Gets light around 0330 and dark around 2430.

 

Oh damm, I thought your address said AR!did you know there is a palmer AR near little rock?

 

I see now the problem.

 

I didn't realize there was a Palmer in Arkansas, but that makes sense as I've mail ordered a few things that got shipped to AR instead of AK.

I'm not exactly sure how the darkness reads on that chart, are the blocks hours?
It gets "dark" around midnight 30 and light around 3:30AM.
By "dark" I mean need to use headlights but its not pitch black by any means. I can walk around outside just fine without needing a flashlight.

Sounds nice perhaps but you can't rely on the sun at all to figure roughly what time it is. Several times I've been working outside and came in only to realize it was well past bedtime!

I wouldn't mind trading a bit of daylight for longer days in winter.

 

Yep, each block is an hour, listed above in military time. Colors show degrees of darkness-- blue is the darkest colour on your darkness chart, which for most places is as dark as it gets the first hour after sundown.
