How often should the sprocket be greased? Also, the little gease gun deal I have is a POS, suggestions on a, good, new one for me to buy?
If you have been greasing, grease frequently. If you have never greased in the past, once you start, don't stop.
I've never had a saw or ran one that you actually COULD grease the bar sprocket. None of the Stihl bars I have are greaseable. I never gave it much thought, figured it was a sealed bearing or lubed by chain oil. I always hated maintenance schedules based off time. Ran a tool room while I was in the military and actually took a write up during an inspection for not doing "required" maintenance on non-used tools. Or a high ranking person with zero mechanical aptitude decided that since they saw a sticker on a new semi truck that said "drain daily" on the air tanks it meant to drain ALL the air out everyday. That somehow turned into draining the tanks on all the trucks, and even the shop air compressor. I tried to explain that it meant to drain the moisture out but of course I didn't know anything. Real fun trying to move a truck and trailer and having to wait 5 mins for all the tanks to fill.
Funny I never grease them. After a few greasing I saw no difference whatsoever and have to say I've never had a problem without grease either. Ya I am that guy...
Had to laugh at that one. Actually it's because the grease can block oil from getting to the bearing. But I like your explanation better.
Personally , I clean the bar ( and the rest of the saw ) with every use . That includes greasing the tip if it has provisions for doing it . I've known folks that have never done it . So, you are going to get answers that go both ways ,and are correct . P.S. , the ones that don't grease are cheap lazy ,and wrong . So , for future reference ,disregard any advice they give you .
They are wonderful ! The only downfall is that they come attached to Stihls ! Seriously , ES bars are great and I like the fact that they have no provision for greasing . Makes me wonder what is different as far as the bearings go . But, if a bar has a grease hole , I'll grease the bar . I have CAD , OCD ,Dyslexia ,am old and grouchy .... Don't judge . On a side note ... HDrock , if you actually got the grease gun that comes with Husq. saws to work , you are ahead of most of us . They are indeed a POS .
I grease the bar tip every time I add fuel. Always have, always will. I also grease the sprocket bearing, everytime I clean my saw. It helps me sleep at night! Agreed, the Husky grease gun is a POS, I have one of those handy grease guns that you have to fill, I just use the same grease that I use to grease my pickup/jeep with.
I grease my Forester bar every time I use it. I have done the Stihl ES bars. The grease gun will shoot it right in between the teeth. I did grease them all before the GTG last week. I wanted all the tips to be lubed up. The better question, is how often do you lube the Bearing under the clutch drum? I grease that one after a good cleaning.
I know saws that never get grease on that one. And they get used daily. The grease never seems to stay in those for long either. I grease it every time I'm in there however. I like how Husky has provisions to grease that one. Makes it easy. Still doesn't make me want a Husky Nixon........ (Ok, maybe a 562, and only if it comes with a POS grease gun...... )
