Never have cut/processed boxelder. The split reminded me of some type of maple, boxelder member of the maple family, and not ash.
I was ten when Jim Jones occurred. Vaguely remember seeing it on the news then. Seen documentaries on it.

Round these parts of MN. Them box elder grow like weeds. People give them away.Beggers can’t be choosee , not bad wood I’ve burned my share. Will definitely take over any soft wood.

I've been sawing on a blown over maple of some variety I'm unfamiliar with. It has traces of red. Haven't gotten too deep into it yet. Should be able to see some in this pic.

Color isn't great but the heart is more red than brown.

    Thanks.
But positively not box elder. Leaf is a stone match for ash.

    Yep. Box elder.

It's great shoulder season wood. 17.9 mbtu a cord. It dries quickly too.

Well learning is half the fun. But I remain skeptical. If you have a moment tomorrow have a look here. I’ll post leaf and bark pics. Thanks.

Seeing what I'm seeing, and I cut a lot of ash and box elder, that's box elder. I've never seen an ash with that heartwood. But I've seen a ton of BE like that.

I've actually never cut box elder. But I've seen them and thought they were an ash also because of the bark.

Norway maple has similar bark too, but has a more maple-like leaf

Box Elder is called Manitoba Maple in these parts. It's good firewood if you cut it green and keep it under cover for 2 years. If it dies it rots standing up and has very little heat.
