Asplundh has been cutting all over the nearby neighborhoods. I was on an errand yesterday and went a different way i havent gone in a bit. I noticed their cuttings in a couple yards. Going along and pass more wood which my peripheral vision caught next to a tangle by train tracks. "I think that was shag"? Another bad case of FHC whiplash. On the way back i stopped and sure enough it was. Had a "keeping wood" sign with me which i brazenly posted. Wasnt a yard so why not? It was Summer like hot and humid today and i only cut half of it late this afternoon. Looks like they had quite a tangle to remove to fell it. Good size. May be the biggest shag ive ever cut. Im finishing a cut on a smaller round with the 261 being mindful of the leaves and a spark flies out...uh oh. Caught the edge of a rusty chunk of metal. Almost fully buried and blended well with the leaves. I dug it out of the dirt and leaves and this is what i hit. Ive hit some strange metal over the years but this is the strangest. New chain on the 261 only touched up once. Still seemed to cut well afterward. I was loading the big chunks and noticed the 460 sliced right through a nail as well. Didnt even know it. Ill sharpen both tonight. Have an extra new 20" chain for the 261, but only one for the 28" bar. Noticed more nails while loading the rounds. Mustve been a "no trespassing" sign as the tree was near train tracks. The orange tag is Asplund's marker for removal. Found those on the wood ive scored in the last couple weeks. Todays haul. Couldve fit it all but was beat and didnt feel like cutting more. A lot cooler tomorrow only rain will hamper my hoarding. Left my sign to protect my claim. Just over a mile from home. A RARE roadkill score! Hickory is uncommon for me to score let alone shagbark. I think there was a small one in my honey hole back in May.
shagbark hickory. FHC slang. Ranks very high on the btu scale and is the highest around my parts that im aware of.
I halved most of the big ones and quartered a couple. The log blaster was able to get through with minimal stringiness. No noodling except one 6" gnarly "elbow" log. The Fiskars halved the quarters easier than i thought. The hickory from my prior load halved as easy as red oak with the Fiskars. 14" DBH tree.
I think the trees in your hood have just resigned themselves to surrender when confronted with the buzzsaw.
Yes you do! I get weird looks and laughs from time to time but if I’m hauling wood, they rubberneck and sometimes a thumb up. Nice Hickory! Hope it serves you well! Keep some for bbq?
Nice one, i got shag all over my property. I love to cook with it also. Tough on chains even without the metal. I heard something a while back that shags pull sand up with the bark as they grow. Thats why there tougher on chains. You definitely need eye protection when cutting that wood, you can get away without in a pinch with other woods but that stuff really kicks it up.
