Well, it happened. I knew it would, but was hoping it wouldn't. Went into the woods and cut down a really small Oak that looked like it had rheumatoid arthritis. Found a small Maple that needed to be taken down, since the top was getting rotten, and did that. Went back in the house and sat down, then noticed a slight tickle on my right hand.......and there the little bastage was. He met an untimely demise. I think I'll douse myself in Permethrin.......man, I hate those dang things. Now, I've lost interest in going to the woods for a while.....crap.
Come and get 'em. They're all yours. Bastids. I didn't pick up the Maple.......so, I have to go back out there and get it, and all the while knowing those little creeps are laying in wait to pounce. To boot, I forgot the IBU before I went out, and now my back is yelling at me..."You big dummy".
Wife and I have found 3 so far this spring. Last year was a banner year for them. I was hoping they would have died off with the cold winter we had.

My son picked one up last weekend planting trees. I found it on his head when I gave him a bath. Gave me the creeps! We don't usually see them unless we go up north. I hope to never see one again!
You've finally joined the 2014 tick club Most days I walk the dogs I get at least one, luckily just on the outside of my clothes so far. Dogs have had them too, even though they have their medicine on them. None dug in . It's a nasty year so far for these little chits!!
Aw man... them lil buggers got you all messed up. Do you have a supply of Sawyer's yet? We picked up 4 jugs o juice at Walmart's. I've been spraying my work clothes ahead and keeping them in the garage. I've never worked outside being this aware of those lil friggahs and paying this close attention to what I've got on and whether they've been treated is a new thing. I spray DW Off on my exposed skin. I'm trying to get so it's no big deal... just part of my routine. Sucks to have to deal with it, but I really want to be able to be in the woods without worrying about it. I know I could still get ticks on me but at least I'm on offense, and the Sawyers will actually kill the ticks not just repel them. Like that.
No Sawyers, but I do have a Permethrin mix I spray on the clothes. Guess I need to spray more, 'cause this guy was very active. This time of year, I become VERY aware and proactive against them. Back in '07 when we were building the pole barn, I got sick for over 2 weeks. Chills, no energy. Just felt like total chit. I now wonder if I didn't pick up something from one of those little buggers and didn't know it back then. I was outside from sunup 'til sundown all summer, so.......
I've had 2-3 ticks on me when we've stayed at the cabin. Could feel em at night. I was lucky... these were all wood ticks and big enough to feel them and get them off. They are a pain to deal with for sure. I just feel better knowing I'm now using at least something that might kill them if they hop on.
You guys are freakin me out , I never saw or felt a tick on me ,never found any on the cat . Had some on the dog when I was a kid , not so sure I would know one if I saw it outside , where are they ? , do they just crawl around on the ground or what ?
They're everywhere. Supposedly, yet not totally correct, they like to hang out in tall grass/weeds until a "host" wanders by. When the host brushes against the bastids, they transfer and look for the perfect spot to start sucking the life outta' you and transfer disease that'll make you die or wish you had. Have a nice day.
... I'm sorry. That was just funny right there. (Need sleep) Don't think there's reason to freak tho. Ticks have been showing up, more and more, in and along the woods mostly, tho they can be in grass obviously too. They attach to deer, squirrels, moles, etc. Some of the very small deer ticks (not all) can carry Lyme disease and all that goes with it. Scotty is in the woods a lot, for his tree work, and has said that he's had many on him at times. They were killed by permethrin, one of just a few chems that really works with ticks. That's all I needed to know, and I went and got some. Sawyer's is a company that sells a spray line and Papadave gets permethrin and mixes his own. The wood ticks are supposed to be harmless, but I still hate em.
This is the first year I started tucking my pant legs into my boots before I tighten the laces up, I'll spray some clothes this weekend if it's not raining.
Bummer on the tick Dave. Our dogs are bringing them home so much we are having to try to keep them in the yard. Didn't I read somewhere that less than 1% of the ticks actually carry the Lyme disease? (Still drive me nuts though.)
What they don't tell you is that they cause night terrors, baldness, incontinence, ED, and a host of other ailments. This is besides the creep factor. Little vampire-ish bastiges.
