Let us know how it splits and burns. Based on the resource tab it has more btu than white oak, and dries in half the time.

Thanks, guys. I grabbed a maul and tried a 14" diam, 20" long round and it didn't wanna split. I'll try again when I have more time. May need some noodling.

Do you have hackberry in your area? It almost looks like hackberry tops to me. Hackberry is stringy if you split it.

I'll try to split in the next day or 2.

If it’s holly, hydros work wonders. Have a load of this stuff to split and stack myself. Your end grain cuts are great, the rounds in my pile were cut really fast and hasty. I can barely see the rings on some of the big rounds

Keep an eye out for leaves when you are unloading. Not sure about hackberry, but holly back-buds (bonsai term) on the trunk and the leaves are pretty tough and prickly, so you are likely to be able to confirm the id.

is there a difference mrfancyplants between a holly shrub (which im familiar with) and the tree in terms of leaves. Ive seen plenty of shrubs with the prickly leaves.

It's amazing how much it resembles soft maple, which it is not. We don't have any of it in this area.

I’d be interested in that answer too.

Have a big holly in the front of my house. I want to tear it out but the wominz say no. Just have to trim it :(
I’ve looked all over on every one of em and I can’t find a trim button on any of my saws.
I cut grass, I cut trees, trim is like French, don’t understand it.

I think same Genus but different species. I’m sure there are different varieties as landscapers prefer dwarfed forms so that your bushes don’t push up the driveway when they become trees.

Ilex vomitoria is a US native holly that doesn’t grow as big even in wild form ~25 feet.

Ilex opaca is American holly and generally grows as high as 50’

I guess it is worth trying to figure out species since the btu can vary dramatically between species as we know with maple, pine and oak.

Couldn't split down the center with smaller maul. Have a bigger maul at other house that I'll bring. Circumference splits below. My gut says this is a BIG bush. But I'll split, dry and burn - I ain't picky.

Holly I scrounged at the dump recently is whiter than that, it is uber white. I can't even see growth rings. It also split very easily. Rounds are about that size.

Now that I see it split I'm beginning to wonder if it's not hackberry. Some hack tops and younger trees don't have the customary 'warty' gray bark. And the only holly I've seen split was whiter than the picture. Sooo..I guess I'll just
 and wait for the winning answer.
