coreboy83 that is one sweet score! It still should split well with sledge and wedge if you don't want to use the hydraulics.

I split a few that were near the top of the stem no problem. The monsters will split just fine vertically :)

And that's exactly why having a MM and knowing what your wood's MC is so important.

If you are 4+ years ahead on wood supply, you can get away without one, but you are simply guessing about the MC of wood, and we all know how important it is to have wood under 20% mc for EPA stoves. If you sell firewood, you better have a MM, and show the buyers the readings.

If you want to extend the stack you have and see what that dead standing tree is for MC, go ahead. I've found like you that sometimes the stuff you just cut is ready now vs stuff you were thinking of burning that's been in the stacks.

red oak wicks up water real quick and easy
check it again in a few weeks

I bet you can burn that red oak this Winter if you keep it dry

I find with dead standing oak the base of the tree can be quite water-logged. It dries out quick tho'.

That's a really nice haul! I've had the same experience as others. D.S. dries out very quickly after splitting & can often be very good firewood in a few weeks to months. That should be some killer heat in that trailer.

I got one! Not as big.

Was a beautiful morning, so off I went to my SIL's, in town a few miles away.

I cleared some brush from around it.

MM - first from the bottom round, then from one higher up. Still needs to dry

Yessah. And a few thin maple trunks that needed to be cleared out.

There's a few more to take down. Being 9n the edge of her yard, multiple oaks are leaning to the open sky. Too much shade is causing moss to flourish. So, who am I to say no? :)

Excellent work ! Ya know, people are trying to bash on our "plastic body, single bar nut Huskys",, I say : yeah right ! Try one ! My 450 absolutely screams. The right bar & chain combo, modded felling spike, modded muffler, I can hang with the "real saws" just fine. Nice score !

Planting a shade loving grass goes a long way towards making lawn inhospitable to moss.

You lucky bastage, nice looking wood. Wish I could get me some of that.

I've found the same thing with SDBO. Bark off, dead for who knows how long, soaking wet 6-8 feet above the ground. It does dry faster than green oak because the water is not contained within the cells.
