Im on the other side of town this afternoon and i pass this fresh cut wood. Another case of FHC whiplash. Luckily i was coming back the same way shortly, had empty truck, time to investigate, and grab a few logs too. This was the stuff roadside. Looks a day old cut. Big trunk too far down a steep embankment. What i could grab including a small elm trunk. I tried to split the shorter pice of elm when i unloaded...no go. Couldve got a couple more but a bit too big. Didnt feel like flipping end for end as i normally would do. Guess where im going with the saw tomorrow? You got it...back to the beech! Ill buck to stove length and load. Should i put some SPF 50 on the Stihl? I kinda miss roadside scores!
It is a town road so i would say yes. No truck there when i went by. I think my town subs it out to Asplundh.
I agree with Backwoods Savage, get all you can. The scrounge is the best part, shows you how you can just do it all at your own time and effort. Problem is that if you’re not quick in some places, it’s gone when you come back. Happened a few times.
I went the next day and cut what I could. My netbook broke so I can't post pictures yet. Screen cracked and it's being fixed. Will post pics when back in hand
Well i went back the next day and cut what i could. (pic from August 21, PC broke and was just fixed so i couldnt load photos) The one tree i grabbed was 16" at the stump. HEAVY stuff, green beach. Had to roll some uphill to the raod. The other trunk (see original post) was at least 20" and waaaay down a steep embankment, so i left it. Maybe a face cord for the score. Didnt realize how dirty my shirt was til i took it off in the laundry room. Dry and dusty roadside. It was VERY humid that day and i was soaked.
This wood was along a wooded area with a steep ravine going down to a stream, so to answer the question i dont know who's land it was. Common around here to see it cut and left roadside. If no sign, fair game. House on other side of ravine sort of on corner of a cul de sac. There was another small pile of old (1-2yrs) of logs untouched nearby, so i figured the fresh stuff would suffer the same fate or another scrounger would grab them. If wood is in front of a house ill ask on occasion, especially if i want to use the saw. Most of the time i grab the lengths i can without cutting as i usually find them by accident. This case i had room to pull over and cut. Lately its been park and grab.
Great find. Yea, better put some SPF 75 on the Stihl since it normally works in the shade. Wouldn't want the orange to get darker and confuse it with that other brand...
Thats true. Funny as i recently noticed how my Stihl hat has faded. Same one in my avatar pic. Been wearing it practically every day since i bought it 18 months ago. inside
