Februar will be a busy month, cutting as much wood as i can. Around the Farm theres some Norway Maples, Ash and all sorts of smaller trees under a foot diameter... On someones elses Land ive been promised dead oak, lets see how far ill make it. Started last weekend with smaller stuff, been cutting down some willows as the farmer asked me to. And cleared some thiner stuff...and some fool dropped the elm onto the old barn. Zhe darn Willow.
The Willow looks a lot like the Vine Maple here. I see you have some Ivy too. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Im just makin a big pile and the farmer will haul it away, no much bother. On the 3rd picture you can see bigger trees, thats where the norway maple is waiting for me so i dont mind a bit of a clean up. I dont think ive ever seen Vine Maple around here but im sure mr. wiki-something can tell me more about it. Yeah you can find ivy here and there but luckily it aint no poison ivy as far as i know
Sunday afternoon with the old man, bit of restacking and new topcover. *poor foto quality, only had my phone with me.
Sometimes those are still OK for firewood, at least with red maple, as long as they haven't gotten too soft yet. If I cut a beech and it's spalted though I just leave it where it lies. For whatever reason, maybe the fungi type, beech just seems to rot.
Looks like it went the wrong way off the stump... did you hit anything? Hope no one was hurt.. Cut through your holding wood on the back cut?
Darn right sir! I thought i still had some left. After it didnt move i gave it a last wee cut and it started movin - just wrong direction. As it did slowly and i was paying attention i made two steps aside, nobody got hurt. I was annoyed that i put my buddy and myself into this situation, i'm always takin my time but not this time. ...I bought this bad boy:
Its elm, i let it dry it will be great shoulderwood. Even with soft bits it still ok but youre right beech gets easy that way, better to cut, split and stack right away. 3 years ago i had birch that went down this road - i did css and after the summer most of it was solid again not as grand as it usualy is but solid. What is Red Maple like?
Unless you've got an older one with rough bark like an oak, it's a bit like beech just without the heat, more in line with grey birch. Dries pretty quick though once split so it's what I target when I need wood for next year or the year after. It can get spalted and mushrooms growing on it once it is dead or even dying so you have to get them processed pretty quick or leave them to turn into dirt. Oak is nice, but unless it's dead standing waiting for it to season isn't. Once you get ahead though you can't beat having lots and lots of oak.
Been cutting brush and smaller stuff along fields and pasture today. Luckily its half way collapsed allready, so the farmer doesnt mind at all. Doesnt sound bad at all, i just got alot of Norway Maple which i like though. I wouldnt mind having lots of oak, right now its mibe a cord. .
Takin a little break from cuttin this elm, while my buddy Ivan the horrible shows off his new range blaze gear. Thinnig this one out mite take some time but truly worth it. Dead Elm and Oak inbetween Ash, Elm, Oak, Black Locust and Alder.
Finished the Treeline today, from now on its just pilling up the brush and cutting up the decent bits. Theres a few dead trees standing there, they need to be pulled out with the tractor, today though the farmer had no time for that. Mibes 2 cords or so for quite some work...zhe Norway Maple is calling me!
Its quite some work, i saw alot of trees that need to be cut in the following years. I reckon you got to start somewhere, always hoping it pays off.
It beats shoveling snow, which just melts anyway. I'm waiting for Friday, 50° and rain, which should melt the snow covering "my" oak, and I can cut some more.
Any updates on the Oak? Yesterday morning it was 28°F in the afternoon somwhere in the 50°F's too. No rain though but sunshine.
