I have fixed vehicles, appliances and heck even chainsaws by watching youtube. Maybe I'm just poor white trash that is too cheap and a glutton for punishment to pay to get things fixed. Latest project was fixing my natural gas dryer thermal fuse. What has this wonderful majik computter do anything station help you fix or what did it make you think you could do and ended up way over youhead?
Pulled my Silverado's instrument cluster and sent it off to be rebuilt instead of a $500 bill spent on a new one (2 years ago). Learned about that with a 3 minute video
Replacing the alternator on an F-350 Super Duty, by the book calls for removing the radiator and about half of the frontend, 6 hours per the book. Watched the youtube, showed how to build a special tool. Took a half hour to build the tool, and 10 minutes to swap out alternators, like it should have.
Ditto So, wife's laptop screen bit the dust a while back. By hooking it up to the TV via an HDMI cable, I figured out the video was ok, so off to youtube I went. Found a video how to replace the screen, by dang near pulling the whole laptop apart. Knowing I didn't want to get that far into it, I found another vid showing a guy who did the screen swap in about 10 minutes. I chose door number two, and got it done in about 15 minutes. Dell wanted somewhere around $250....I DIYd it for the cost of a new screen, which was about $80.
Do it yourself I don't like paying someone to do the work I can do. I have paid to have my furnace repaired, new tires mounted on my truck, paid the well guys to get my pump primed I could not, paid pros to cut trees. That's about it, everything else if, I don't know how I will figure it out, in the past, I hit the books and the library, now the internet is a big help I still reference the books though
I was talking about this exact topic the other day. How did we get along without it in the past? Well, engines and components were simpler, tech wasn't as prevalent and we had Erector Sets.
I'm YouTube bound for anything I want to do that I'm unfamiliar with. I started changing the headlights (not the bulb, the whole dingy, oxidized assembly) and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't come out when I had all the screws out. It turned out there was one located behind the grill that isn't visible until the grill is removed. 30 minutes after YouTube and I had nice clear headlights again. Music is a big one too. If I can't figure out a song by listening to it, I used to buy a book. Now it's YouTube. I've never come up with a "No results found" message when looking for "How to.........."
Upper control arm on GMC a couple days ago. Saved over $200. Replaced smashed screen on amazon fire for $20. Watching someone do brakes has given me the confidence to do brakes on all my vehicles saving a bunch of money. Still considering how I'm gonna deal with a busted glow plug on the Duramax. May end up doing my own video on that one with an idea I have in my head. Good thread.
I like to watch craft Youtube videos. there is a whole series of basket making I enjoy watching. The cooking videos are great as well. Lots of ideas for children crafts as well.
You didn't watch the one on how to solder in the new stepper motors?!?! Me either I sent my cluster out years ago lol. Drove around with nothing in the dash for 4 days!
