I know many of you in here like the big rounds. I am not one of them. Had these bigguns dropped off yesterday. That’s a 24” bar on an echo 8000 for reference. My tractor struggled to pick up a 4’ section. Yes, I know, they make a lot of splits but they just take too damm long. These suck even worse in the heat.
Love big rounds. They put out so many splits. Noodle them down to manageable and carry on as you wood with smaller logs. Or ship them to me! Lol.
Are you really looking for sympathy from us for the free, dropped off at your house, knot free hardwood logs you have to cut up? I have to work my butt off just to get the logs to my house. Half the time I have to cut the live tree down and contend with the brush. You skipped like 5 or 6 steps!!!
Gotta have a splitter that goes vertical for those big 'ins. I quarter them vertical, then go horizontal to finish. Rinse. Repeat.
Truly, The best option is to quarter them with a big saw. If you don't own a big saw, then lots of wedges and a sledgehammer or maul. I've done it both ways. Even getting them to a vertical splitter can be tough if the round weighs 500 lbs. The real fun ones are the knotty bastards that you sink 3 wedges flush with the round and nothing cracks, only water seeps out.
I have dealt with about 8-10 cords worth of them so far this year...they take longer than smaller wood. Time is money when you sell.
Yep. Nice splitter, but only for small to medium/large logs. Sux for really big ones though. Too hard to wrestle a 500 pounder once its in 2 pieces up on the splitter. Takes 2-3-4 guys to maneuver those.

I won't kick big rounds out of a pile but the effort to move them without equipment and to hand split can be a real PITA. The oak I'm getting now is like that. It's a relief when I get a sub 20" round.
