Just made a deal for a Fireview, 2011 model year, never used for $2k. Apparently this older gentleman used to be in the wood stove business. The CI trim is now a light grey. I would like to paint it bronze with Stove Bright. My question: Am I making a mistake painting a new stove a different color? If it’s taped good, I’m thinking it should turn out ok. I want a stove for this heating season and it will fit in the fireplace hearth just fine. It might be on the small side, but I’ll never get a new Woodstock PH for quite a while. If it’s too small, I’ll just sell it and get a Progress on order. Thoughts?
I would make sure you can open the side loading door and have proper clearances to any wood trim or mantle. Will you be able to access the back of the stove to set the air control? I just saw a used PH on FB marketplace for only a few more hundred. There was member posting a PH for his friend on here.
I should have enough room to reach behind the stove if I offset it to the left on the hearth. I could probably find a decent deal on a used PH somewhere in this country, but time is not on my side.... got down to 42 deg here last night!
I wish Kuuma sold free-standing wood stoves. So far only wood furnace and sauna stoves that I know of.
Should be perfectly fine to paint it. WS has given me a number of rattle-cans of paint to touch up some of the beta-test stoves we had. I assume you could get paint from them if you wanted to ( if you were after one of their colors).
If you paint it and it doesn't come out quite right and you decide it's the wrong stove for your application will it have been better to have not painted it regarding any future merchantability ? I'd probably paint it because I'm gonna be looking at it, but if it might not work .....
I know one of the guys there at Lamppa (Dale or Daryl) told me a few years back that they actually sell quite a few of their smaller model furnace, the VF200 (which is not currently in production for various reasons, "coming back soon" supposedly) to people that are "off gridders" which surprised me, but he said that the small blower on the 200 can easily be run from a solar charged battery bank for quite a while, or some even go sans blower, just allowing it to gravity heat...assuming that means it is either set with up ducts that will flow by gravity, or plunked down centrally in the cabin/house/building and treated as a "free standing stove"...if that was done you could run the computer controls off a battery bank for a LOOONG time, as it pulls almost no power! Pretty pricey "stove" though...
Picking it up Thursday. I’ll post before and after pics. And also when I get it set up on the hearth.
Update: The day before I was going to pick up the Fireview, I called WS. I asked the expected delivery for a new Progress Hybrid, thinking it would be several months. To my surprise they told me 3rd week in November. I ordered it. They called me Friday and said it will be delivered this week! I am impressed. Will update with pictures after the install.
Spent some time going down rabbit holes in regards to the KUUMA 100. Sounds pretty impressive. There is a home locally that has the sauna stove (used as a wood stove) and they enjoy it very much.
The one I pm’d you about, 20 years old never used...for even far less...was gone by the time you and I traded a few pm’s. Oh well!
Update…Had the Progress Hybrid installed last Thursday. This thing is HEAVY! Luckily hired a professional with a stair climber dolly. First few fires were low and slow. Glass was full of soot. Gradually increased temps…glass is now clean and stove works like a champ. I might have slight buyer’s remorse due to the size of it placed on the hearth. Somewhat overwhelming. Fireview would have looked better.
Oh yeah, that's way too big. It looks awful. I'll be by in a couple of days to dispose of it for you. It sure does fill the space. Hopefully it works very well.
