Came across this decent score a few days ago. I was pretty sure it is white oak, but somebody told me it was silver maple. Never saw silver maple this straight with limbs more at the top. It was cut in the spring, so no leaves to be found. 20180914_175958.jpg 20180914_180003.jpg 20180915_163909.jpg

I'm not sure what kind of wood you have there, but whatever it is, it looks nice and solid. I don't see any evidence of rot. Great score!

It is pretty solid. Only had one or two rounds with about a 2 inch hole. Darn heavy too.

It is definitely a type of maple. Not white oak. Bark is smoother than oak and ends of rounds don't show grain pattern of oak.

Well if you are right, it was free, close to the road, was able to cut around the knots, and best thing is it will burn.

I say some type of maple, maybe red maple. But the bark doesn't look flakey enough for red so maybe black maple
You are in the right area for both. If it's dense and heavy I would go with black maple.

Looks like Maple from here too, with what looks to be a bonus PI vine attached. :picard:

White oak bark is very scaley, you will know it when you see it. I would go with maple on that.

I was wearing gloves....no big deal. when I was younger I was good for getting it at least twice a year.
The crazy thing was I was thinking about it the whole time I was cutting and pulling the vines off, and then scratching my face and neck with my gloves on....no rash there.

I agree Dave. For some strange reason I could not get that to clear up so just left it for you.

I like a man who is sure of his wood ID, I know what you mean about not getting things to change. It happens to me a lot.
