Looks more like Hackberry to me based on the branches and bark. Some Hackberry have ridges and plates rather than bumps and warts. Easy way to tell would be get a better look at the branches, maples opposite branch but it's hard for me to get a good look in the pictures on this phone.

All the Hackberry I've seen around here has much more gray/white wood...although this would be the biggest one I've seen so far.

Here's a load of Hackberry I got back in the summer that broke in a storm. This was just a limb...

That's what I was thinking too, but I was leaning more towards red maple. Me and Scotty Overkill just cut down two large red maples this past weekend and the bark in Rangerbait's pile looks awful similar.

Since you have some twigs there, look at the buds. If they are across from each other (opposite), then probably maple.

Yep, and based on what I can zoom in on I don't see any opposite branching, but it's difficult to tell.

Thanks for the replies, gents...I'm going to have to pass on this one; a lady around the corner from my dad's property just had a bunch of White Ash trees taken down, and couldn't afford the haul away charge.

Guess who's coming to her rescue??

Seen as I've never even heard of a Hackberry tree till I joined the FHC, and wouldn't know one if it fell on me, my guess would be Red Maple. And yes, get them both!:stack::stacker:

Opportunity cost...I have some friends that want me to take down a few of their Shagbark Hickories, so that's high on my priority list.

I would definitely pass on red maple for ash. Norway or sugar maple maybe not though.
