I built this on an extreme budget 15 years ago with osb sides and after setting mostly ignored for the last 2 years at my parents house I decided to fix the old girl up. It’s coming together pretty nice so far. She will haul wood again soon. New lights Make New light brackets New tires and wheels Pack bearings New trailer sides New fenders New tongue box New chains New tie downs in the bed.
Pete, it must feel darned good to have time to do these things now rather than staring through a windshield all day.
Indeed I was. The trailer and I have an understanding…. It doesn’t tip backwards and I set my beer on it. It tips backwards and I yell at it. So far I’m winning.
Nice work! I'm jealous, I wish I had a garage/shop to work in... I may actually be able to own/make something nice then
Also, great call on the spacing on the side walls…increased airflow means speeding up the seasoning process! Seriously though, the trailer looks great—nice work.
Looks like I hit a big old stop today. Because its an old popup frame that I ripped down to make into a utility trailer it has 29" fender wells. Probably why I built wooden fenders originally and I must have forgot. Talk about looking for the needle in the haystack yesh.............. I might have to buy 32" and cut them down or just go cheap and make wooden fenders again. They did last 15 years! Well sort of
Apparently IGA only carries Miller lite because when I went for a 12 pack of PBR they had a lot of Miller lite and everything else was out of stock
Thanks I was going to do the front like that but I had enough scrap to make it solid. Less mud all over everything in theory.
Make fenders out of a plastic barrel...then they can be (almost) any size you want. Could cut fender material out of a IBC tote liner too...
I was debating using a 55 gallon drum I’ve got laying around but it would be too narrow. I’d have to extend it. I do have IBC totes laying around that’s an interesting thought.
Too narrow? You mean the barrel is not large enough diameter? I would think a "ring" cut out of a barrel could be sliced and the circle flexed open to be a good bit larger diameter...if that makes any sense. Might hafta heat the plastic some...I've found that even rigid PVC heated to 220* becomes very flexible and can be formed easily...once cooled down it stays just like you left it.
Its an old steel oil drum. I am debating cutting each end off of it so it keeps the ends as backers for the fender. I would have to cut each fender in half and then extend them with the remaining metal. A lot of work I don't want to get into although I might... I am going to family farm and home to see if they have any 28" fenders tonight. If they do problem solved I can weld angle on each side support to set it on for support. If they don't well no big loss I suppose.
