My wife and I have been checking out Well Seasoned 's neck of the woods. It sure is beautiful up here! ACH] Franconian Notch from the Tramway. Trail along the Flume Above Echo Lake. We are gonna climb Mt Washington today (in the truck).
Unfortunately it is against New York State law to display that while traveling within the confines of NY..
The Cog railway is a great trip. Short time to explore on the summit but an impressive engineering marvel. Here is some interesting info on Mt. Washington. I love reading stories like this: Since the Cog's opening in 1869, engine crews and construction men had used 3-foot-long wooden sleds for rapid descent at the end of the day. These "devil's shingles" were grooved to fit over the metal cog rail in the center of the track. In descending the 3 1/4-mile-long track, riders controlled their speeds by pulling up on hand brakes, forcing metal arms to pinch against the center rail. Up until several serious accidents forced the banning of these devices some time before 1916, they were a preferred mode of descent for many Mount Washington employees. Ed Maule, after printing the paper, frequently took a bundle down to the Base Station. Reportedly, he averaged 5 minutes in most of his trips, which translates into a speed of 42 mph. (The record time of two minutes and 45 seconds by comparison, meant that the rider averaged better than 70 mph).
