The final drives on my deere 4100 tractor have been leaking fluid and I can no longer ignore it. I tore it all apart and went to the deere stealership for the parts. When all is said and done all of the seals and bearings for both only cost $167. They gave me a exploded diagram.

I completed the first one today, it took me most of the afternoon. My pinion gear bearing was giving me a heck of a time. I was not going to go to the parts store for a puller or any other tools. I heated the whole assembly up with the propane weed torch after the map gas didn't cut it. Heat it and beat it. Pretty red neck but it worked.

I just need to do the other side tomorrow and pick up some gear oil.

I've got a freebie 18hp craftsman riding mower
    It's 20 year's old
    I've had it 4 year's 20200803_182111.jpg first failure
Uses a bit of oil but the often hated champion plug held up for many year's.

I'd rather do it in the heat than the cold. Hopefully i won't have to to it again for another 20 years. I can only imagine what it would have cost at the dealership.

Looks great. I have one in similar shape. This might just be my motivator.

It doesn’t look to have a ton of hours . But it looks like it wasn’t maintained judging by how some of the parts look . It’s got a roached piston . The cylinder cleaned up completely. The crank seal on the PTO side is basically gone ,and The carb needles ( H&L) were set at less than 3/4 turns out ,which seems a bit lean to me . So, that’s the likely cause of death . I’ll P&V test it on assembly . Any how , I had to order a wrist pin removal tool as the piston doesn’t use circlips . So, I’m kinda on hold pending parts . Hopefully I can find OEM rings ,and piston for it . Time will tell .

Nothing was broken a coil of the spring popped over the recoil assembly
I rewound it tight it's fixed.
Probably the high compression caused an issue it's over 200+
no base gasket 268 hyway popup
    Several guy's couldn't start it
You have to really want it. 20200812_174923.jpg Putting a farmertec 038 magnum tank on today
    Seems well made
Haven't had a 365/372 china tank leak yet
The guy said you won't want to give the saw back when your finished
He's dead wrong the 038 is my least favorite stihl ever.

Banging together this 345, left and looks to be straight gassed, with this 340 that somehow had this oil tank burn thru.
I’ve come across bubbled and blackened oil tank decks, but never burn through.

First saw build for one of my boys.

Ran pretty ok out of the gate.
Realized the tensioner was bungled only as we were mounting the bar
Lipstick and rouge...we’ll get to it.
I wanted to see him start it.

289173F0-7B04-48BD-B9DA-403E59A7FE3D.jpeg This is the farthest I’ve ever torn down a saw. Also the dirtiest saw I have ever touched. Basically paid $1 for it at an auction. Piston looks good and has some compression (didn’t check it before I tore it apart) and has spark. I hope it’ll run.
Planning on this being the saw my 12 year old granddaughter learns with this season

Where are these auctions you are going to Sandhillbilly ? Are these local part swaps or something on line?

I grabbed this 435 this morning at a yard sale. Kinda seized. Offered $10 and with a handful of hand tools, was out the door for $20 all in.

piston looks good but the cylinder is dry. Spark plug dry as a bone.
Sprayed in some blaster where ever I could and was able get it to turn with a spanner on the clutch. But it won’t go through TDC. Like it his a negative squish. We’ll pull apart to see what’s happening. Doesn’t sound good.
