IMG_0289.PNG IMG_0287.PNG IMG_0288.PNG Hunting this fall I came across this guy. I've hunted these woods since the 80's and purchased the property 3 years ago. I've never noticed it before.
It'll take a little work to harvest it but not sure it's worth the effort.
Anybody have some good insight on an oak burl market?
I'm guessing it best dimension is about 3.5 feet.

Yeah, some cash would be gooder!
I don't have the answer to "what next" but getting it down to ground level, maybe smacking it with a hammer to hear if it's hollow or solid? That's what I was after... hopefully some wood turning folks here will chime in:yes:

I'd have to make a trail through the laurel to get it. Not a big deal but that would be pizza to whack it and find 10lbs of sleeping ants.
What are ants by the pound?

Or sell to this guy at $0.50 a pound. Beats the price you'd get for firewood!!

Someone else showing that a guy is willing to pay 50 cents a lb. Don't they use those for guitars too?

if it sells by weight, may as well wait for spring when the sap is up.

all depends on what it's like inside could be full of rot veins or a lot air gaps, really don't know until it gets sliced open. Had some sugar maple ones that looked very promising but no go. So its a 50/50 shot.

Would be interesting to know what he does with the burls when he gets them.. No doubt he can have a significant markup on them but I don't think you'd be able to make a living out of it..

I'm guessing he is a hobbiest? I actually just moved out of the center of the highlighted area in Nov. Its a bunch of little neighborhoods, with a couple of big farms thrown in.

I think it's damage or disease initiated. My guess would be it's a defense mechanism to build some mass around the wound

Really a crap shoot with voids and fractures within. But, it can be cut and and sold off as smaller blanks for turning or carving. It could be pretty lousy to have a chunk fly off a lathe while turning if there is a weak spot. Live edge bowls are popular, but still a crap shoot if it dries and cracks when finished.
