Hello. We don't usually see anything but white birch around here. This stuff looks like pine bark at a distance. Maybe black birch? Any ideas? IMG_20210927_101513656.jpg IMG_20210927_093636811.jpg IMG_20210927_093627212.jpg

Black birch would have a wintergreen scent to it. Very good firewood.

I'd be guessing at it. I'll leave it to those more wise than I.

Looks like River Birch to me. I've never scrounged any before, but around here it's a very common, fast-growing yard tree.

I'll go with river birch then. Smells like watermelon. Anyone burn it? Thanks everyone

I bought a few multi stemmed off eBay for cheap. This is after 1 season of growing. They were pretty much twigs when I got them

    +1 Looks like river birch
I've never seen one growing in the woods and they might not be native here, but they were popular as landscape trees in some of the housing developements here a few years back.
Lately it seems everyone has to have a weeping cherry by the front door.

River birch. This said without looking at the other replies. Popular fast growing yard tree. Scored some myself over the Summer. Get it SS covered fast as it seems to punk a lot faster then normal birch.

    +2 for river birch.
Don’t know about your neck of the woods, but “paper birch” & “white birch” are considered the same thing here. “River birch” is distinctly different and most commonly referred to the same as the OP’s submittal- my neighbor has one in his back yard. I helped him cut down what he called a paper birch (white) in his front yard a few years ago.

Thanks for catching that Eric. I really did mean to say "river" but typed paper. My bad. In my older age this has been happening more frequently.
