Took down a dying walnut tree in my yard this afternoon. As I was working it up I noticed several sections with these black pellet-like objects in them. Some type of insect larvae would be my first guess but they’re so uniformly made I’m not sure. Any ideas as to what these are?

Annual Cicada. They overwinter and grow in those, and then hatch out. I found them in the rot an oak branch that came down, and several were about to hatch out.
