What inexpensive stuff for CSS do you value most?

    Hi folks,
I have a serious question: what tools/devices/things related to cutting, splitting, stacking, moving, handling, burning etc. of firewood do you value most? This would be stuff in three groups, under $100, under $50, and under $20.

I'm putting together a Kickstarter campaign for my rocket stove deck heater/cooker/pizza oven that I'm building, to raise capital to go into production, and I'm going to need to offer different levels of "incentives" for different levels of investment. (The first prototype was explained here, but it's evolved a good bit since then.)

So I'm trying to find universally appealing "stuff," especially if it really useful/helpful but not necessarily something a newcomer to firewood processing would think of getting. (Milk crates don't count ;-)

I want these things to be as universally useful and helpful to you personally in your firewood hoarding as possible.

    Thanks!
    Brian

Gloves would be on that list in the $20 and under group.
Don't know how to group it, but an ash rake is nice to have.

Pickaroon, Hookaroon, Sappie or wood pick.

They are almost unheard of here in Australia. Almost every time that someone sees me using mine they ask me about them!

I don't go near the stove without my trusty HF welding gloves. 3 pair for $10
I always use my simple, but custom fabbed coal rake.
    Ash bucket and shovel.
    El Cheapo wand lighter

Since I had strokes and I have residual left sided weakness and walk with a cane, the Tuff Duck Backsaver log carrier apron has been invaluable in moving stuff, not just logs. IMG_1243.JPG

And SuperCedar fire starters are a great addition to any firewood hoarder's hearth.

Brian, my wife made one of those, except it doesn't wrap around my neck like that one (although sometimes, I'm sure she wishes it would:)).
I think she used a small rug. Works pretty well, but I haven't used it enough.
I buy the cheapest wand lighter I can find (usually about $1.50), and they last most of the burn season, if not longer.

Well Brian, not allowing milk crates really brings this thread down a notch or three!

Gloves, matches or something to light with (lighters), super cedars or similar, ash shovels, pokers, small dust pan and broom for cleaning up, stove thermometers, soapstone blocks (glove or boot driers).

Ash buckets, log tongs, heavy winter gloves, infrared temp gun, moisture meter, log chain, pickeroon, cant hook, marker for marking length of logs, wedges, axe, splitting maul.

Those are just some ideas that come to mind right away. Probably will think of more but so will others.

    Good luck on this.

Thanks Dennis! (Maybe I'll offer a milk crate as a basic incentive after all - I wonder if I can get "Backwoods Savages' firewood processing friend" imprinted on the milk crates?!)

A friend does all the video production for a big Catholic online website and he's going to produce this Kickstarter video for me as his contribution to the effort.

We're going to shoot the video in late August but I needed ideas for this part of the campaign and you and everyone else have been very helpful!

Since this will also be marketed to deck and patio owners who don't necessarily use firewood, I'm going to encourage the use of compressed sawdust firewood bricks (as there's no metal stove to warp or warranties to void and we're not shooting for long burn times here) and as an angle for this to utilize recycled "green" technology. So I have to think of things that would be used with that type of fuel too.

Have you burned the bricks already? If so, how did they perform? Also, did you try from different manufacturers?

Oooooh, this could be big. Sell it to Ronco to market it at $19.95 for 2. There's a fortune to be made.

They worked exceptionally well. They were a local brand sold by a landscaping supply company. I haven't tried other brands yet.
