so I finally made it to my favorite saw shop, Ron’s Saw Shop in Watertown SD thinking I was going to get a new Stihl 400. After comparing it to a 261 it was pretty obvious that the 261 was the better choice for my intended use. The salesman put both in the scale and the 261 came in 3 lbs less and it was definitely noticeable in my hands. He even took the safety chain off and sold it with a yellow label chain at no extra cost. I put the inner spike on as well. While I was there I took advantage there buy 2 get 1 chain. Now I just have to get it in some wood.

You can’t go wrong with a 261. Looking good with the outer dog too.

Your gonna love it Dakota Hoarder. Mine is my go to saw unless I have some serious big stuff then the 462 gets the nod. I was at my dealer today and he had a 400 on the shelf with a 25"bar. It just diidnt feel right. So I put it back down.

Well, good choice! You need a 261 whether you get a 400 or not in the future. I am thinking a 261 and a 400 would make a good combination to have. :)

261, 361 and 462 here, 361 will go down the road sooner or later. 261/462 combo is a knock out for anything I need. 261 might get ported to match the 462 at some point.

    .

Good point, but why not? I have a 261, and 362 and a 462, and a 461, and I still keep eyeing a 400 every time I go to the saw shop. However, I guess in my case, it's just CAD kicking in, not need.

It doesn’t fill any holes, only reason is to say you have it which I can get behind! :D I do think the 400 would be perfect for a one saw plan.

That is a good combo, but right in the middle is the 362 and my first grab, more often that not, is my in-between 362

Yes, If I was starting all over, I would very likely choose the 400 as my first purchase. However, one of the best things I like about my 261 is how it fits on top of my grab handle in my side by side, and rides there continuously, with just a piece of old Romex house wiring twisted around the handle bar to hold it in place. So, when I unload all of my other saws, it's the one that stays with me, for unplanned needs, that and my Winchester rifle.

Congrats on the new saw DH! Ive owned mine for two years now and love it. My only regret is not getting the Mtronic as im really liking it in my three Stihls that have it. (500i & both 201's) Been considering trading up for it.
What bar length did you get. Mine was 20" which was fine for back saving and even buried it a few times with no problem. Now wears a 16" and even better.
Too bad there wasnt some of the honey locust hanging around yet for you to :saw:
Enjoy and hoard on my friend!

261 is definitely a great firewood saw! Nice buy for sure.
That road could end at my address when you're so inclined good sir.
