Love the daylight in the evening. Got out side for almost 3 hours today. Cut and hauled out of the woods nearest the house. It’s about 40yards uphill. Hoping by the end of this year I’ll have it cleared enough to get a 4 wheeler in there. Was joking with a friend about how I was going to need to borrow his splitter if the big quarantine comes. Came home from work to find it sitting next to my stack. Finished splitting the ash and cherry we hauled out of the field at the end of Feb. Nice! You don't have to go to the gym either, after a few hrs. walkin' 'em up the hill. I still hand-split some of the easy woods, like Ash..I think it's kinda fun to whack stuff once in a while.
That is a pretty good friend to anticipate your borrowing the hydraulics. I am older and I know that I will always have some hydraulics around.
Uh oh. Someone caught the Hydro-bug going around. I find the splitter myself a very nice convenience when the wood has more knots in it than I’m willing to whack at. My recent oak load was an example of this and the maul head bounced, the handle stung my fingers, lifted this stuff nearly 3 times now. Splitter makes the blocking more possible for those beautiful looking stacks like you have there.
Ive watched hydros a couple different times this Winter. Ive been nibbling away at some Hickory rounds with the Isocore and if this was all i had to split i might consider getting one. My "problem" is i hoard wood faster than i can split it. I enjoy it. Great work out, very satisfying watching the logs fly apart. Some nice looking stacks!
Part of my stipulation for heating with wood was a hydro splitter. I watched dad growing up and knew splitting by hand wasn’t for me. Now 10 years later, I wish I had a kinetic. Nice stacks!
I never used to think I'd like hydraulics but it took about 2 minutes to decide that hydraulics are a winner! Yes, from time to time I wish I could still split by hand but then my body reminds me that I should stay far away from that.
Hydro here , especially with getting older . If you decide to go hydro do yourself a favor and consider one with a log lift even if you have to wait a little longer and save up for it. I recently upgraded to one with a lift and now I just scratch my head wondering how I split so long vertical with no lift. Now splitting horizonal with a lift and it is like night and day.
Sounds like you have a good neighbor, keep him close and happy. That type of a guy is getting harder and harder to find let alone keep. You never know just how much you might need him, or he might need you. Try and stay ahead of him on doing favors or little things for him. I enjoy helping people, just because its fun for me. but, if they don't appreciate it, i mean i don't take money or anything, just a thank you and that's all. One guy i hung around with, if he did some thing to help, he'd say, ''now you owe me''. That's not a good way to thank some one. it develops ''social distancing'' really fast. lol. I cut down a pretty big fir for a guy last week, my saw's, my gas/oil, my time, i had a blast dropping it, and liming it. Helped him stack the limbs, and we had a great time, one that i'll always remember, it really cleaned up his place. He said, can i give you some money for gas, lol. What did i use a cup? He thanked me, and i knew it was genuine, I never told him how much fun i was having, lol, it might have opened a whole big can of worms. ha,ha. and i DO NOT DO A FAVOR, FOR A FAVOR. I do what i did for him to help him out, and make him feel good about his place. He has a monster maple on his driveway that REALLY needs trimmed right to ground level. But, since this little ''glitch'' in the times, we decided to not do it right now. Its not a threat, but needs cut way back and down.
I like to maul split a little every now and then. Technically I still own 1/3 of a splitter with extended fam, but I bought my own mostly for the convenience of not having to plan the time-sharing aspect.
This is true. My brother-in-law has built up a good circle of friends over the years; each helping each other out. My BIL will give a good deal on something, or help with some work like electrical wiring and in return can call in favours when he needs them. He helped me get an almost new water holding tank for the house (15 gal tank); cost was $15.00 USD and it came with the pressure switch. BIL contacted a friend, friend knew where one was available, and now it is here.
