Hello The water filter change light came on in our new refrigerator and all I did was open the compartment that holds the water filter and closed the compartment and the change light went off! Is this change light on a 6 month timer? New filters are $45.00 Same Brand filter as a whirlpool. We only had the refrigerator for 6 months! Fridge is a KitchenAid. Will the filter actually last much longer? We have good water, can I use it without a filter? According to this water filter ad, the filters should last 5 years not 6 months!!!! See pic 2 !!! Should I just buy the bypass, which would be better than having a dirty filter in there? The last option is to get the bypass cap and then buy the much cheaper inline filter at Home Depot? https://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-Universal-In-line-Water-Filtration-System-for-Refrigerators-or-Icemakers-GXRTDR/202073877?cm_mmc=Shopping|G|VF|D26P|26-9_WATER_TREATMENTS|NA|LIA|Air&WaterQuality|71700000052725342|58700005047623356|92700044092941849&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9N2_qIaP4wIVSv_jBx03BQqsEAQYBSABEgKUr_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
I would pick any option besides ignore replacing it. Drinking water that has passed thru a old filter full of filtered out crap is filthy, disgusting and pretty much gambling on the filter's capacity for filtering out pathogens that are breeding in that nutrient rich old filter. Betcha 5 bucks that manufacturers guarantee for lasting 5 years does not cover actually filtering filthy water. This is why many refrigerator manufacturers put a 6 month timer reminder on the filter. An other option is shut the water off. Make ice the old fashioned way with trays and labor.
You can do the bypass, and a cheaper inline filter. Or just put an even cheaper to replace whole house filter on like I did, in conjunction with the filter bypass. GE Whole House Water Filtration System-GXWH20S - The Home Depot Replacement filters are 5-6 bucks for 2 at any hardware store.
I have Frigidaire. Water filters just "get clogged" eventually. How that happens I'm not sure. Ice cubes just get smaller and smaller. I cut one of the filters apart and could find nothing built up in it. Even city water can't be that full of stuff. I think the charcoal just eventually clogs the outlet and it's done. Good for business. I got the bypass. Works great. Plenty of ice. No more filters.
If you want to filter anything, it's a maintenance item.......just like oil filter and air filter for the car. We have a whole house filter and change the filter once or twice/yr (we use way less water than average). Have the water tested and use the results to tell you how to proceed.
Yes, I change my house filter every 6 months and it works great. I won't buy those expensive filters for the fridge, rather just change the whole house filter twice a year .
Beer, already filtered. Ice cubes, whisky will make them safe. Our fridg was the same. BS light on way too fast. Gotta be a great revenue source for them, what do expect for "only" $1000+++ for a stinkin refrigerator.
