Debating what to order for next season more Vermonts or give Wood & Sons a try. Anyone used both care to comment? sam
I'm mostly curious about amount of ash produced. The Vermonts I can go 4-5 weeks (30-40 bags) before getting a full ash pan (and that's when cleaning). There isn't that much price difference, $10-$15/ton less for the Wood & Sons. Maybe I'll just get a couple tons of each, I can always mix them. sam
My experience with Vermont is overall good but I do find differences from year to year and batch to batch. Last season I burned 3 ton W+S and 2 ton Vermont, previous years mostly Vermonts. In my opinion the Woods outperformed the V's. That being said my wife likes Vermonts and the local distributor is only a few miles from us so we did V's and I'm on a well priced ton of LaCrete to finish this season off.
Sam, they are both great. You already know all about the Vermonts. I have not burned as much W&S as unbidden, but I did burn about a ton over the past two seasons, and like them a lot and expect you will have a good experience with them. Both are local NE companies and stand behind their product. Maybe consider doing a mix and match instead of going all in on one brand. A little variety never hurts.
Just received Frederickson’s early buy postcard in the mail today, Vermonts are $295 picked up, $305 delivered.
Decided to get 4 tons of the W&S, $295/ton during Fallons spring sale. Have 2 tons of the doug firs and almost 2 tons of the Vermont left so if I need to mix them I have plenty of stuff to use. Went to Fallon's this morning to place the order, sales guy asks "when can you take them", I said anytime, he said "we'll be in Kingston on Sat, see you then". Nice, over and done with. sam
I use nothing but Vermont pellets. Best I have seen so far. I do not like to keep pellets over the summer. I did that one year and the humidity got into them and they were Doug Firs so they did burn ok in the Harman but not as good as a fresh bag I got closer to the fall.
me too...sorry i only got a ton. i also bought wood and sons and vermonts...the W+S are new to me first time trying them
Ran the P43 last night as it got into the 30's and used a bag of the W&S. Heat and ash seem just the same as the Vermont. One thing I did notice as I was restacking on sat is the seams on the bags seem slightly fragile, had to put some packing tape on about 10 bags that had seams open up. Only about an inch, bags were from the middle of the pallets. Possibly they didn't get heated & sealed right when they were being bagged. Sam
Vermonts I have tried years ago burned hot but left buildup in the stove (P68) that no other pellet has left. Bad batch, maybe as someone else with an XXV had same issue off the same pallet. No it wasnt an a stove issue....... Still havnt tried Woods and Sons but what has been discussed in this thread are all top notch, cant go wrong pellets. LaCrete are my everyday go-to with 1.2 ton in the garage for next year Matras-burned some 2 seasons ago and have a ton in the garage for next year As I burned under 2 ton this year, I will likely just go with what I have and unless oil spikes, do the same oil/pellet dance as last few years. Ive always had pellets in the garage (doors open daily unless raining hard) over summer with no issues whatsoever. But they have also been full unopened pallets with the protection still on them.
Good to hear as the ton of Matras and the LaCrete I have are from from Henry this past season. He got them in and delivered em a few days later.
We have a Shelter Logic shed-in-a-box and in March started using a pallet of Vermonts that had been in the back since fall of 2018. All the bags were just fine, no moisture or critter damage. Hope to say the same for the pallet of Doug Firs now buried bottom back left which I probably won't get to till March of 2023. sam
