I finally got around to working on the big oak logs that got dropped off. This particular log was between 14” and 16” in length and you can see the average size of my splits. The two questions are how much do you think it weighs and how many splits. I know the # of splits because I counted out of curiosity. The weight I determined by taking 20 random splits and putting them on the scale. So let’s here those guesses. Oh and that’s a 32” bar on the saw
My Red Oak blocks at 2' long & 36" dia run North of 600LBS. & yield about 30 splits, but I split big. Gonna say 375 & 42 splits.
a 32 x 16 inch cylinder would be 2.9 x 1.3 feet = um, 8.5 cubic feet cubic feet ; oak weighs 45 pounds per cubic foot, so 45x8.5 = 382 pounds guessing 64 splits edit: 64 is taken so I'll do 63 2nd edit: 2nd guess seeing as there are 2; 381 pounds 65 splits
What's the prize? One dry red oak split to be picked up three years from now on Feb 16, 2022 at 7:55AM ?
Bring one piece inside by your stove and weigh it tomorrow. It’s amazing how much it drops. Probably 10% of its original weight in 24 hours if that wood was cut green and just came off the stump. Green of the stump oak will lose about 40% of its original weight.
