Tune up ?? Like filters, spark plug and tweak the carb ? $80 is about what the going rate is at a official paying taxes with employees shop. Now for a lot less $ and some patients it's a good thing to do yourself. Plenty of knowledge here to help you along.
Maybe that’s why I dont let official paying taxes shop work on my saws. Dont get me wrong, I support my local dealer but not to that extent.
I had my Stihl 260 services a few years ago. It was running fine, but I thought after 6 years some preventive maintenance would be a good idea. I paid $125 for a new Stihl bar, spark plug, air filter, fuel filter, and sprocket. They checked the carb adjustments and cleaned the spark arrestor. I was fine with that price-must be close to $100 in parts.
Everything other than a rebuild is very easy to do for any of us. However, I have yet to adjust the carb on my saw. B&C, sprocket, plug, filters.......couldn't be much easier.
Yes i do all of my own maintenance but as far tuning the carb and the hi low stuff iv never been good at
$80 for a tune? I tune my saws almost every time I cut, sometimes 2-3 times a day. I would have more invested it tunes than I would the purchase price,
I agree $80 is high to simply tune a carb but it really depends on what is all involved in the tune up. The Stihl/Husky shop i'm at charges a $50 + parts tune up rate for saws but that is going up. They are now implementing a $100 per hr labor rate for anything not bought here, and i disagree with it but its not my call.
My FIL had his Stihl 011 tuned cost him $100.00 didn't even replace the filter or spark plugs. Saw started when it left the shop but wouldn't start when he got it home. I replaced the plug cleaned the filter and adjusted the carb. Starts and runs. The guy at the shop offered $50 dollar trade for a new saw.
Friends mom brought me a mower and asked if I wanted it because the shop quoted her $180ish for a new carb. Turns out she flipped it over to clean it out and the oil ran into and soaked the air cleaner and plug. I don't think they even looked at it.
Not sure but I believe that it happens all the time !! Most of the time I bet they dump the old fuel, put in some fresh and dribble some in the carb and all that is left is to pad the bill.
Wow. Maybe I should go back to repairing saws for the public again. 80 dollars is crazy for a spark plug and less than 30 minutes of work.
It's like when you take your car to the dealership for annual maintenance and they offer to change the cabin air filters for an extra $50. You can do it yourself for $5 and 2 minutes of your time have two extra filters for next time. Most people are inept and gullible. According to P.T. Barnum there's a sucker born every 39 seconds. Q~
That's too much. It's really not that complicated or time consuming. I understand why they charge so much, but I also understand why I would never pay it. They are pricing themselves out of business, in a few years the battery technology will render them obsolete. I look forward to that time.
