White ash and tulip poplar bark is very similar but the btu is much better on ash and it splits easy. Sadly we are losing all the ash now due to the borer.

Looks like ash to me as well.

The only down side to ash is, well, it didn't get that name for nothing. Burning ash I clean out the stove 3 to 1 over burning oak. Having said that, ash is still one of my favorite woods.

Thats a tough call. Bark sure looks like ash, but end cut says TP. Ive been fooled by TP thinking it was ash. The TP usually has a whitish fungus in the crevices that ash doesnt.
Ash great firewood. TP dries fast, low btu and good shoulder season wood.
TP in my woods. Notice fungi in crevices. IMG_4373.JPG
You going for it dougand3 ?

Yeah those end cuts don't look very ashy to me. I do hate questioning you guys on here though cus I'm no expert! But I've gotten a lot of white ash around here and it has a nicer looking grain than what I'm seeing in those pics.

I think if you pull that loose piece of bark off the center round you'll find EAB tracks. Any tulip poplar I've ever, and admittedly, it's not been a lot, has a darker, green colored center.

Very hard to know for certain without being there for a closer look. On a lot of the EAB killed Ash I've gotten, there was plenty "blonding" of the bark caused by the woodpeckers constantly trafficking up and down the tree, going after the larvae inside. I agree with Ralphie Boy, peel back the loose bark and if you see the tracks with larvae frass left behind, it's definitely Ash.

The ad was on FB and FB won't let me msg fellow for 2 days - says "You're not authorized to do that". LOL. I can msg others, tho. Maybe this wood was gone in a day but ad keeps popping up in my "free wood" searches. Curious.
