Decided to drop this Oak today. Had a really bad twist/lean. Thought it would’ve had more rot... o well, no more dead hangers.
Nice job. Looked like a fairly easy fell. Just run as it starts to fall! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
For me,, ‘Twas a challenge. All the weight was hanging sideways over the hill. The top was tangled up with a smaller Elm. Lost the largest lead up top
True. I tried to not damage the Elm,, but the tops were tangles up pretty bad. My Sweet Melissa was kind of upset that the top of the Elm got torn off... but she now sees the benefits of having more Oak in the stacks. Yes : it will be top covered, it will get cribbed ends, and if I had a splitter, I would use it vertically
Can we have an expert tree identification here? That bark does not look like any oak I've ever handled.
It looks like oak to me, but I do not live in MN either. Old Oak here will develop deep bark fissures like that. Growth rings looked tight enough to say it was fairly old and thus deeply fissures bark. I freely accept that I could be wrong.
Looks like the one I fell in town last month and I call em "pizz Oak" just for snickers as it sure does have an aroma too it.
You can still use it vertically, bring that maul down bud. Smacketh them rounds. The Red Oak Sea shall part! Nice getting it down without much hitch. Doing a bit of guess/estimation, the inch shows 11 rings and by my sight this tree just makes 99 years from midpoint.
Many more times than twice! cutting it, bucking it. loading it. unloading it. splitting it, stacking it. hauling it inside, hauling it outside! that there is eight times if'n you don't need to restack or move stacks or any other unforeseen event!
Your right of course, in this case i guess its meant all youve mentioned = making firewood and burning it... makes twice. Just an old sayin. Back to Topic: coreboy83 you still havent told us what sort of cut you used to bring it down. Please be so kind Sir! As we're all interested.
An old farmer buddy used to get so upset every time he heard that and would start to rant on Ronald Reagan. We started doing it on purpose just for giggles. Great guy, but man he never let ol Reagan live that down. Still a good laugh among us buddies.
I think it looks like an oak. Old one. Lots of species get deeply ridged bark as they get Old. Looks like you did a good job of falling it. Yup , good job !
