Customer of mine had a couple huge silver maple limbs fall over their driveway from TS Isaias back in early August which i cleared for them. They asked me if i'd take the tree down. Too big, too risky...next to wires, road, houses and property line. Tree was taken down yesterday. I didnt think the wood was going to be left behind but it was and they offered it to me. Normally not a wood i aggressively seek. Bucked to uniform lengths, not much in the way of gnarly chunks, back in and load which are the silver linings to this score. Didnt have time to grab any today, but stay tuned.
Did Asplundh take it down? They would leave it. Never burned any Silver, but I’m heating with some red rn. Those big rounds will fill a rack up quick.
Not Asplundh. They hired a tree company. Dries faster than red. Im using some now that was CSS around last Christmas
Wow, that is a score. If the rounds are the size you use. You continue to amaze at the quantity you deal with!
I am really enjoying silver maple right now actually. I got one middle to late summer, split and stacked, and already it's at 17-18% moisture. Sure, it's not oak, but it get's plenty hot, and burns for a reasonable amount of time. The coals also burn down nicely and doesn't require much stove cleaning. I have no problem getting the fire restarted from coals in the morning.
They were going to donate the wood, but not being split they couldnt take it. He gave me the go ahead to take, but she texted last night to not take it all yet. I really dont wanna wrestle those big uns. Like you im not fond of 16"+ rounds. No time today. Maybe some tomorrow.
