This is probably one of my first posts in the woodpile in quite a long time. We moved a few weeks ago, and I gave away about 1 1/2 cords of my seasoned wood to family and my good neighbor. I now have some small acreage to harvest wood. There is some maple, hemlock, aspen, red and white pine. I kept the the t-posts and wood racks from the last house. There is an area next to the barn where some large aspens were cut down. It was all bittersweet vines and raspberries or blackberries. Basically a sandy wasteland. I found trash bags, old hoses, a car antenna, a hibachi and various crap in the top layer. Today, I finally got out and set some blocks and posts. When I get my chipper over here, I'll lay a bunch of chips down between the racks to keep the weeds down. This gets a lot of full sun once up and over the tree line. I'll need a wood shed at some point, but now is just getting some dead standing put up and dried. I worked on the red pine leaners all hung up at the top. These are still solid, and I got what I could on the ground. when I get my truck back from the shop, I'll pull the rest down. Here is where I'm at today. I have a lawn tractor arriving soon and I will get a yard trailer to haul this out. Too much work with a wheelbarrow right now. I'll update this one as I go. It sure feels great to run a saw and drop some dead trees. There are plenty of other dead standing for cavity nesting birds. Just the leaners are coming down.
I'll need a stove first. I'm putting the cart before the horse. Seasoning wood is one of the top priorities. We have dino juice here now.
looks like a good start. Those single row stacks, lots of sun and standing dead will have you set for the next season. Best of luck in your new place. Keep us updated fishingpol
Thanks Brad. I don't think I've had a chance to welcome you to FHC. I've skimmed your posts and you are "on it like a hornet." Nice work and keep posting.
There is a lot of 3"-5" already cut branches all over. When the tractor gets here, I'll yank them all and have a nice pile. It should fill the racks and probably start a third. My neighbor sells cordwood, I'll get a call in and get a cord dropped off.
Looks great fishingpol ! Congrats on the move and while it can be a lot of work sometimes it's nice to start fresh, figure out where the stacks are going live, cutting/processing area, wood shed location, etc....Best of luck
We are so happy for you Jon. I hope some day to pay you a visit at your new place. For sure, get as much wood ahead as you can. I like your wood racks. Build more!
I'll start a thread later this summer for the stove install with some pictures. I'll look for some advice on where it will go. The Fireview is still what we have in mind.
We had a bit of wind the past two days and I told my son to stay out of the woods. We had a small branch snap out of a tree and take a section of a large limb off the huge sugar maple next to the barn. I cleared below it and droped the rest of it. A red pine leaner dropped down a bit. I got that one cut that one up. I had some gas left in the saw and worked on the red pine leaners. They are hung up in bittersweet, so I pieced them back. The pine tree that these leaners are hung up in is choked out with bittersweet, and may have to go too. I should be able to get them down with the tractor since my truck is still in the shop. I have rounds all over the place. I need a few hours to fetch them all to the splitting area in the wasteland.
Chipping away at it. Here is the stuck hemlock in the crabapple. It is deceiving... Fishingpol (ing) it down a section at a time. I rolled the top out after cutting it free. 5 minutes with the pole saw really sucked. I got the top half of the pole saw pinched in a 2" branch. That ended the it for the day.
Nice work fishingpol , are you thinking about a new mud oven? Everything that came out of that looked great.
I pretty much cut all bread out of my diet after a medical issue last year. I may get the wood pellet pizza oven for a thin crust now and then. No plans right now though.
Jon those pole saws can be nice but can also be a bear. Funny how things get so much heavier out on the end of a pole.
