Got any interesting or unusual family side dishes besides the usual potatoes, stuffing etc? We like to pick another every year to try out. My family breaks out two recipes every year and maybe a couple times during the year. Indian corn pudding, kinda like corn casserole with cream corn, eggs, sausage and parm. Spinach pie, is a spinach, mushroom, sausage quiche.
Being French, my wife makes what is called her meat dressing. Browned pork and Hamburg with onions. Mix with mashed potatoes, and some poultry seasoning. I still prefer any variation of bread dressing/stuffing, but the meat dressing is good as a meal by itself. Re: leftovers. That is, unless there's enough to bake between pie crusts. It'll get made a day or two earlier. Then reheated in a crock pot. Anything that can be made ear lier, is a plus. I'll deep fry the turkey. Can't beat 15pounds being cooked in under an hour.
I'm going to make a batch of company potatoes this year. Here we've done mashed for decades. I'll freeze 1/2 and see if it thaws ok.
Rich creamy potatoes w cheese in crock pot. I have not made them for years and seems everyone is using frozen potatoes obrien now instead of dicing by hand = awesome for me! Potatoes, cream of chicken, cream of celery, sauteed onions, garlic and cheddar and whatever else one wants to add (veggie, ham, bacon).
Sounds wonderful! My fat cells are jiggling with glee as I read this. Have to have a talk with the Wif as she is going to the store today. Thanks for the description.
Not really a side dish, but homemade bacon as a garnish with BloodyMarys while the bird is in the oven!
This was a side that we ALWAYS had at every holiday meal at my grandparents house. I've never seen it anywhere else, nor have I ever heard anyone ever speak of it either. Watergate salad. Watergate Salad Recipe
Dawn made an ambrosia salad which is very similar to what Mwalsh9152 posted with thea ddition of mandarin oranges, shredded coconut, and pineapple. DaveGunter, that Indian corn pudding sounds delicious! What a perfect Thanksgiving side! I'm going to also start a Thanksgiving meal thread. Can't wait to see everyone's spread!
Roasted veggies. Cut up into chunks: sweet potatoes, onions, turnips, parsnips, rutabagas, carrots, beets, at least.... all the cloves from 2 heads of garlic(peeled), celery.... and whatever else is in the fridge. Spread it out in a big cast iron baking dish or whatever.... spritz w/oliver oil, season w/whatever you like. Cover w/foil. Bake 350F for 75min.
Mrs MikeinMa likes turnip, so we have it. I even peel and cut it for her. The bowl gets passed right along when it gets to me.
My whole life growing up, my Mom was an inveterate punster. The whole family would groan in agony every time she delivered one of her zingers! MikeInMa that was very painful!
Around here that's a common dish for carry in meals/reunions/etc...just never heard it called that before. Tasty stuff
