Sun is warm today but snow melt exposes wet slip sliding nasty ice! No rock salt so what to use?

Non-clumping cat litter, ashes from the stoves or sand (I keep six 40-lb cat litter pails full - get it for free from the local dump). I use damaged (wet and clumped) pellets to fill low spots that develop from the truck driving into the tent garage.

I go down to the end of my road and grab some beach sand.

I grab ash out of my OWB and spread it on the ice.

You know, I just emptied our ash pan in a planter in the back, should have put it on the iced over snow in the front entrance. Idk, I don't want to track wet ashes in on warmer days though.

That said don2222 , we've picked up a few tons of another brand of pellets in a jam and every time there is bag or two or more that got wet so we did not run sawdust through the stove, but it helped both start the wood stove and with traction out front (our front faces north ((roll eyes)) ).

I will say that I don't use ashes at a doorway, just for that reason. But I have plenty of paths that I can use it on while leaving enough distance to get the residue off my boots before getting to an entrance.

You know the one caveat is if using Doug Fir's, they are so hot they actually melt the ice :p

    Yeah... I agree.
Don't like the wet ash sticking to my boots/shoes..

LOL! This thread cracked me up! Yea, I made the mistake of putting ashes out to the entrance to the back door,1 time. No matter how you shuff your feet in the snow, you end up with black on your carpet. Generally, winter truck has a bag of cat litter or oil dry(from auto parts store, same thing, clay). My theory is, whatever is cheaper!

We use the horse stall shavings and a good pair of these .
Concerning the "pair of these", if you have a Runnings store near you, those are half the money there.

Got to love the bag on those "Glow Boy" pellets; it states "Not for Human Consumption". Gee, I never would have guessed.
