And, many may already do this, but thought I'd have my honey get a pic of what I do to eliminate dust. After I got a good thrashing for having her come down to the basement with her jammies on... :heidi:... ... I use my shop vac as an air cleaner. I jam the hose up under the front of the stove, on top of the back of the ash bucket. I'm not trying to catch the solid ash on the scoop, just the dusty air. Works great. It draws dusty air from inside the bucket as well as the front of the stove area. Here's a pic...

Now that is something I need to look into. I get a lot of fly ash in the air even using the clean out plug and ash pan. I have a question though. I saw an ash vac in the shops. Are ash vacs designed so that you don't have to worry about sucking up a coal and having it to flare back to life?

"Are ash vacs designed so that you don't have to worry about sucking up a coal and having it to flare back to life?" ... No, an ash vac would have a filter designed to catch the small ash particles, similar to sheet rock dust. You should always be concerned about sucking up a hot coal, bringing it back to life. Again, I'm using the vac as an air cleaner only here. And, my stove has been cold for days. Shouldn't ever vac the stove ash itself, if there's any possibility there could be a hot coal.

    Gooder method Stinster:yes:
I think I might have put a pic up of my apparatus some time ago.... I use a sheet metal floor register and some straight pipe. My setup sits atop the stove like a hood, shop vac piped into it by way of a pipe end cap with a 2 1/2” or so hole hogged out. Sucks gooder.

    Edit- found it...

On my PE I take the top plate out. Then close the stove door. Go up on ladder and send the brush down my liner a few times. Go back open stove door and scoop out the crap. Then I’ll hit it with the vac. Zero dust that way

Blow the ash out the stove pipe so it never comes inside, aerosol cans do a good job.

Eric VW Do you have a bag in your shopvac to keep the fine dust from being scattered in the house?

    Absolutely, Erik.
I use the Shopvac “yellow” bags- the ones rated for Sheetrock dust. Never any blow by/thru.

What size shop vac do you use? I have a 16 gallon one that is a Craftsman and a 1 gallon Shop Vac brand.

I’ve had a 10 gallon for maybe 12 years.... I have a 3 gallon for the pellet stove upstairs in the LR.

i was looking at the local hardware store and did not see a yellow bag for the 1 gallon vac. I am using my larger vac to suck up water off the garage floor when snow melts off of the car. Nice having a heated garage in Wisconsin.

Eric VW I just checked with the local Ace Hardware and they have not heard about a yellow bag to fit the 1 gallon size. They have a 6 gallon one that would use the yellow bag. $60 plus tax out the door. I will consider that one.
Thanks for your help and guidance.:handshake:

You could source a slightly larger yellow bag and fold the whole bottom edge, staple it, and install with no issues.....

Thanks Stinny , I still use that trick when cleaning the pellet stove after you suggested it

There are other brands of HEPA that are not yellow. Not sure the hole in these for your hose is the rights size, but they fit 1 and 1.5 gal vacs.
