Stacking Rant

Folks,

I realize that very few people will have sympathy for me but I just gots to vent! In mid-December, I had 4 cords of gorgeous, clean, freshly split white ash delivered. The supplier cuts logs into the length you want, splits to the size you want, the splits go up a conveyor and straight into the bed of a triaxle truck for delivery. The only dirt on the wood is from splits that wind up on the absolute bottom of the delivery pile. OK, so far, so good.

He delivered a gorgeous load of white ash and my plan was to stack a few wheelbarrows every weekend. Been there, done that. Today I actually loaded a 6 x 10 trailer with wood from the pile and stacked it. You would think after two months that the pile is getting smaller but no, it's not. The wood is being stacked on pallets and while the stack is definitely getting bigger, but the damm pile is not getting any smaller! I really think there is a "Wood Fairy" who drops more white ash on top of the pile during the night.

If anyone has any ideas on how to stack would faster, I'm all ears. Rant over, thank you very much.

 

We stack as a family, goes fast and easy... I crib ends while girls (wife and daughter) fill in between..
In short, enlist help

 

I started building racks like this Simple pallet firewood rack two years ago.
My kids and random guys from church do most of the stacking, and these racks make it almost idiot proof.
I go around and tap any sticking out with the back of the Maul, and any that are too long get trimmed with a saw.
This year was the first time I refilled an existing rack, made my stacking so much easier

 

Gee golf66 , I really feel bad for you. This is an absolutely horrific problem.

Spend more time at it, cover the ears so they don't get cold.

 

I've had 3cord deliveries of cut split wood. I can imagine one more on that pile. Makes for a big pile! Just keep moving. Know the amount that you've stacked, and you'll know how much the pile has shrunk. Go easy, go steady, watch the back

 

Oh my. Im thinking and hoping that you must be just having some fun with us but.. The thing to do is not look at what you have left to do but what you have all ready done... Oh heck, this isn't going to work.

 

Get yourself one or two of these, they make picking up wood so easy.
I use one to lift the end of the splits, allowing me to grab it without bending much at all, once you have one you won't understand how you made it without one

 

Well sir, that's a good problem to have. If you could just capture that 'Wood Fairy', to a firewood hoarder that would be akin to the 'goose that lays a golden egg'. You could hire her out to your wood burning buddies and make a fortune !!! Oh, by the way...I'll be in the flatbed Ford right behind Eric VW. lol.

 

Hehehe... seeing as how you brought it up golf66 ... I doubt if there's even one hoarder on here who loves to stack wood. We love what it looks like once stacked though. That's the goal. You'll get there. And once you've felt how good that is... and then a stack or two fall over... and you stack them again... you'll feel even betterer... ... think heat...

 

Do splits breed like rabbits?

 

A 6x10x2 foot cart would have been almost a cord. That should have been a rather visually discernible 25 % of a 4 cord pile.
3 more of those and you'd be done.

Poor baby ! In this part of the universe, only tree length loads are delivered by tri axle.
Those CSD load would fall all over the place on a tri axle semi.
You may bring that surplus to Maine.

 

Yeah I'm not really the biggest fan of stacking from a huge pile. Usually I split and throw it into a pile that I know I can get through easily without breaks or leaving it for the next day. Endless mounds are tiring.


Anyway yeah sorry I'm not feeling too bad about your huge pile of prime wood!!
