Looks like it will be a reality this winter for myself, adding the second small stove upstairs last winter and teaching the better half how to use it is going to keep the oil heat stat in the off position a full winter. (except for a full test run cycle last fall ) Have came close in the past years, 50 to 100 gallon of oil for a winter but with the 3+ year wood plan, a second small stove and a wood heat loving woman it looks positive.

Anyone else ? or close to it.

I have a second woodstove on the first floor that I use when the temps are in the low teens and lower. It's more of a support stove, it's in the addition that has 6 windows and a door. I've only lit it 4 or 5 times so far this winter.

What room upstairs are you planning on yor second stove?

I'm working on the 3 year plan, but I need better woodburning equipment to get to the no natural gas heat part.

Summit is in the basement and the small Efel is in the upstairs living room. sounds like you use your setup like mine the small stove as a kicker, works out great.

The last time I remember buying any fuel oil was in 1977. Does that count?

Wood heat only for most of my life. Continuously for the last 16 years. That's the way I like it.

Got the wood stove installed last February and haven't had the heat pump on since. ( except in the summer for A/C)

We got our 250 gallon LP tank filled to 80% in Sept. Checked it this afternoon and it read 77%.

We moved into a home with no furnace in Oct 2013. That winter was record bad, -30* overnight for days at a time, did fine with 2 smoke dragons. I am spoiled with a pellet stove this winter.

How well I remember ! Bet that pellet stove is a spoiler after last winter with 2 wood eaters.

Between 1995 and 2010 I didn't have a thermostat in the house. The last 3 years were supplemented with a pellet stove (awesome for shoulder season and to keep the house from totally freezing). We moved in 2010 and the first winter in the new place, with no hoard built up, sucked. Luckily LP was still reasonably priced. Since then I've been working on the hoard but struggled finding places to cut until this year. Last year when the LP prices were spiking I traded a snowmobile for a Daka wood furnace and rigged it up just outside our walkout basement french doors. That combined with the Answer in the living room drastically cut our LP usage. This year I refined the furnace setup and greatly expanded my hoard so my goal is to use less than 100 gallons over the winter including that used for water heating.

At least you guys got decent hard wood down on your end of the state. I get envious every time I drive south of Duluth.

This is our first winter in our new home. When looking at houses last January, I was very specific with my girlfriend that we weren't heating with oil/lp/kerosene. Luckily the house we were looking at had a hot air wood furnace in the basement (which wasn't hooked up to the chimney) and a fireplace in a sitting room. There was also an oil furnace in the basement. We closed at the end of March so we finished the season with oil. Over the summer I disconnected the oil furnace. We had a new SS liner put in and hooked up the wood furnace. We haven't used a drop of oil yet and don't plan to! I think we'll be adding a wood stove to the front room upstairs for the shoulder seasons. Plus I like the ambiance. The fireplace is nice but is in a room that is never used and doesn't put off good heat.
