Wow, can't say I've ever seen an open-grown one before. Almost have to look long and hard to recognize it as Black Locust. Even on the rare occasion when I come across a solitary tree, the canopy is narrow from competition with other trees. That tree has character

Its standing so its safe. It is very unusual to see a solitary tree like that. In my travels i know of only one ive seen like yours and funny you posted as i had thought of taking a pic of it and posting.

Yep, I've seen a few around here like that. I wouldn't touch it unless getting paid a lot. Not a straight piece in those trees, they cut hard & split worse.

Maybe I am just slumming it but, if it catches fire, I will gladly take it and burn it.

Next time I'm in Columbia County, NY I'll take some pictures of some monster black locust growing there. Two people can join hands and still not reach around some of them.

Speaking of Black Locust, I was over at my cousin's place today, welding on some pipe fence, hanging some cattle gates, and he took me down the line on the old fence, and showed me a black Locust fence post, that had been cut off of my place and set in the ground in this fence line, by him and his dad, back in the year, 1975. So, it's been in the ground in this fence line for over 45 years and it's still solid as a rock. It's about 12 inches in diameter. It was as solid as if it had been set in concrete, last month. They don't all last this long, but this one did.

This is on Cape Cod. There's lots of black locust clusters, all around the area.

Biggest black locust I've ever been in was last June.....it was a monster, close to 80' tall to the tips, base was alost 4' across and rock-solid. There are many large ones here, but this one was exceptional. Took three heaping dump trailer loads of wood from this job, I kept all the big rounds.......
