I’ve had dreams of a big wood smoker for a long time. And it’s been sitting in pieces in the garage. I bought the metal probably like 8 years ago. Well I’m hoping to get it put together in the near future.

Buts been a long time since I fired up the stick welder. What rods do I need to buy for this? Here’s a picture of the plate metal.

link? My original draft was copied from Lang smokers. It’s going to be a reverse flow smoker.

Good time and good excuse to by a mig welder. A Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP or Miller Multimatic 220 will mig weld, stick weld and DC tig weld. You could sell your old unit to help defray costs. I have the Lincoln 210 as well as two smaller machines, and love it! Use the .035 NR 211 inner shield wire (no shielding gas for this, buy the gas later).

the problem is,if your not experienced it will lead to GIANT amounts of sadness and disappointment..there may be some of that too with a wire feeder but probably less

I've got a big Miller at work. If it becomes too much of a issue, I’m sure I can talk to the boss about borrowing some wire.

But I’ve got these two old timers. And the last time I used it for welder up hardware for my jeep. It did a good job.

I've done a lot of welding with the old tombstones. Probably every farm or ranch had or has one and tons of 6011 rod burned on them. They get the job done. One advantage of the wire feed is the thin metal welding capabilities with gas shielding. Not trying to push you in any direction. Just introducing the opportunity to maybe upgrade and gain expanded capabilities in the process. We do like to spend other members money here at FHC and it doesn't always have to be chainsaws! Wish you the best of success in your smoker build!
