Did a little perusing on the net today, found something that encouraged me to take a second look. Full oak skids. I headed out to a small city/town outside my work after the day was done. The guy offers me to take what I could in my truck and since I didn’t have my saw with me, he offers his battery powered circular and sawzall. BRAVE effort indeed but after just knocking down one side of the skid, I told him it’s best I bring the trailer and maybe the saw tomorrow. The boards on this are an intense stalwart in comparison to the pallets I had been recently dealing with. I might try getting some lumber out of these. The price was fantastic as it’s getting harder and harder to find these or nobody seems to want to sell them? At least the MM was with me and a reading on a fresh cut thick board said 12.8%. Not that it matters but didn’t hurt to check. Some firewood, others might be great to make the floor of a wood stack and get a roof on it! I probably could have grabbed one more, but the truck has some nice anchors for straps and I figured playing it safe was the goal. Heading there tomorrow after work for more.
These went for $5 each. Now I’ve scored a couple skids and posted them on here but usually only got one or 2 at a time then it was dry for long periods and those were free. It was a bunch of them used in some kind of pipe shipping. While it’ll cost me something, in the long run, it’s still a good buy being the sheer volume of them. These aren’t those store pallets, at least one of these weighs around 6 of those.
If you find distribution centers or anything that loads heavy supplies, I’d check out those places. The industrial parts of town are helpful but not knowing what they want to do with them, you might be able to find something and if you do, strike up a deal?
Just got back and put these up. I swear if I were to wrestle these every day for a month, I’d be ready for that American Ninja Warrior competition. What took less than a minute of real fork loading time, was about 20 for lifting these out of the trailer. I’m still in awe. Check out the last photo. That’s how far I got with the first one.
I scope out the industrial parks in my area about 3 times a year with my trailer in tow. Usually find something useful.
That’s what I used to do and I usually found the skids at a roofing supplier company since they were supplied directly from the trains right there from the tracks. This made sense since the large cargo was easily shipped and offloaded. I don’t see their pallets out so much. I don’t live there. But on the occasion I’ll drive out there after work if I don’t have to hurry home. Nowadays it’s the odd finds. Haven’t found one of the big skids in a long time.
Nice deal right there. Yes, with skids that size, would definitely build a wood shed with a few. You might know a feller that has done something like that...
