Wedges are like chainsaws, you really can't have too many. You can always cut large wedges or "gluts" out of large diameter (four or five inch) hardwood branches. Hickory, Dogwood, White Oak, make great gluts. (Please, no "great glute" pictures. I know somebody's going to) How to make a glut
I LOVE the Collins axe head! The old factory that made it is about 15 miles down the road from where I live. Beautiful place rich in history. I just bought this wedge on ebay......and dunked it in a 5 gallon HD pail with vinegar for week. Took off all the rust/patina. Will hit it with the wirebrush, put an edge on it, and then into the toolbag it goes. Another Warren-Teed heat treated 5lb wedge. These things work amazingly well. So much better than the blue wedges they sell at HD. Here is the before: And here's after about a week.....Needs a few more days. I'll grind off the head - those are dangerous as heck. Previous owner should have done that....but then again, the previous owner might have died 60 years ago too.......
Cleaned her up pretty good.......Put an edge on it and sharpened my original Warren-Teed 5lb wedge as well. Now they have each other as company! Will clean it up with the cutoff wheel tomorrow....
I used to split everything with a wedge and sledge. Now I noodle and if the splitter won’t get it, off to the outdoor burner it goes
First time putting a handle on a head, it was trickier than I thought but enjoyable. I’ll bet my left bollock it ain’t coming off either
Yes they are the ones I pulled out of the old handle. I’m not sure if one is better than the other but they both get the job done
