I have a pellet insert for my chimney. This is me laying down and looking up my chimney.

    1. Should I be concerned about that rust? Can I leave it as is?

    2. If it’s a concern, should I use a drill with a wire brush and shave it all off? Then do I spray paint it with high heat paint?

    3. What is the name for that piece? Not sure if there is a name for it. Say if I ever wanted to replace it. What do I google?

Is it an exterior or interior chimney? Does the insulation above the block off plate feel moist? If you don’t have an ongoing moisture issue, I wouldn’t worry about it. If you have a leak or if you get condensation in the summer time, it might be worth addressing the root cause. Might not need high temp there but couldn’t hurt. Or you could just rub some vegetable oil on it to stop the oxidation.

    Ah yes damper, thank you.

I never touch it. Is it ok if I leave it as is? Or will this be a bigger issue in the future?

    Exterior.

I’ll have to check for moisture.

Fairly typical, about average......not the worst, not the best. Keep an eye on it....take another pic in a year
