I just purchased a pellet grill and the bag states for outdoor use only, so whats the diff on hardwood pellets and pellets that go for heat . I would think hard wood would burn hotter.

Food grade pellets don't use additives, but some heating pellets do to help bind the pellets together. Alot of heating pellets are hardwood.

I was also told food grade pellets are made using food grade oils on the pellet machines. Plus you get to pick your wood species with grilling pellets.

IMHO... in all probability it is likely meant as a disclaimer, as in "only use outdoors so you don't asphyxiate yourself" kind of thing. Because people....

In fire wood maybe. But not pellets as the pelletizing process equals out the density.

In heating pellets most of us prefer softies and the fiber is cleaner overall. Softwood contains less ash than hardwood in general. But soft or hardwood fiber that's clean and has a high bulk density(compressed during pelletizing) will be comparable in BTU value.

The firewood crew will hate me, But if I wanted a quick house dechill fire in my wood eater. I would toss in some pine(well seasoned of coarse). But never low and slow like the hardwoods.

Try some LaCrete's before you totally pass on softies. LG's are just middle of the road softies at best.

Variety is not the buzzword around here... Every year it gets harder and harder just to get some that are not overpriced, I just happened upon them at a semi-local gas n go. We are getting screwed in the northeast. This from Menards today just to name a few.

I haven't seen them run a sale this year, yet. Not sure they will? What my current menards has in I will not burn. In years past they usually have had one or more sale weeks on pellets.

Yeah I get it, I know the local mills, and know what works best for me just like everybody does (those that care anyway) If I could get a decent pellet for $4 something a bag I would be a very happy camper.

I agree with the above and just to add some other softies that have been great without putting overprice DF's on the list:
    Vermont, Woods + Son.

Weirdly, even though we are right next door to where they are made, Vermont's are very expensive (kind of like NEWPs - I am 12-15 miles from the plant, but they are more expensive than comparable pellets from Maine and Canada). I only get Vermonts off of CL during the summer when people are moving - which means I don't get them very often.

That's the part I just don't get, there are 8 or so (or more) mills in ME/NH/VT/MA, and just over the Canada border which is about 2 hours away. So why I cannot get reasonably priced local(ish) pellets is beyond me.

There was a time when you could get them for about the same dime as others. Then some idiot's opened their mouths about how good the softies were.

Yep, TSC & Lowes have them. Nothing at HD unless you go out toward Asheville (mountains)....they get snow & colder temps. HD website says they have Chows out there.
Haven't been in any local garden/landscaping places, so don't know about those. Lowes $247/ton, TSC $239.50/ton
