I want to build a muffler play saw. I'm having a hard time deciding what to try to build. Maybe you guys can help me out. I want to do a 4 or 5 cube. Up to 65cc or 81cc. Not interested in 3 cube or larger than 5 cube really.

My vote is for a 365 special! I REALLY like the 365SP, light, nimble and plenty of power even stock. Do you have a subject saw on hand or are you going to build it up? However one of those Solo 665s would make a good subject for a build. I am going to send two off to Randy to play with and he wants his own. You could port it or throw a 681 top end on it. Or, have both top ends 665/681 and when the urge strikes switch back and forth!

1128 Stihl all the way. Ported and turned up to 11 they are nasty especially the 77cc version. Parts are easy and cheap, and the knowledge base is fantastic as the saw is so popular.

All things being as equal as possible, would a 365/372 really run with a 046/460 built beyond "worksaw" standards?

I haven't the foggiest idea on a 65/72 running with an 'breathed on' 046 however my guess is no. I guess it depends on how Mdavlee defines 'play'.

Should this be my next saw, Bri? What do they go for stock?

They are all over the place depending on condition. Absolute mint examples still sell for $900 although I don't know why since the 461 is just as good if not better at that price. Dex just picked one up (460) in perfect condition for about $700 PHO IIRC.

I would say $5-550 would get you a good running 460 with some minor cosmetic flaws.

The 046 I rebuilt for a guy had $200 in box 046 to start. Then had $400 total in it when I got done, $100 labor $100 parts. Only one that ever impressed me stock. Had D shaped cylinder. Other stock 460's I have run are lacking.

    I'm a little bias :emb: But I voted 046/460

Grizz - As MM stated, I grabbed a Mint OEM MS 460 R (true R model, not a look alike, like mine) for my buddy for $700. You can get a decent one starting around $450 and up to the $800-$900 range for Super mint saws..

Looking forward to whatever you build Mike:D

Every saw, started as a new saw. If Bryan comes over tomorrow, he will attest that my 460 looks pretty "beat" up.. Definitely not clean anymore. . :(

So, Dexter, don't make a mess of the 7900 of Bryan's on Sunday. You have no idea how much time it takes for me to get them as clean as new when they go out.

OBTW a little PAM cooking spray on the saw body and case front will keep pine tar from sticking.

Take your wife out for a nice bottle of wine and dinner, and don't talk about chainsaws! Perhaps discuss your retirement plans for your land down south.

Well that free time didnt last long. Went through a spool each on 2 weedeaters to finish up the honey do list.

Instead of rewinding one I just grab the other and keep going. 1 straight shaft husky and curved mac left. I stole the motor off my 3rd one a straight shaft big homie in JD colors for a back up mini tiller.

I do hate weed trimming. :headbang:

You are never finished with the 'honey do' list, stuff on that list multiplies like bunnys! Olga started hers about 3 years before we got married and it only gets longer! At least she likes to sit on the JD and mow. Perhaps because the seat viabrates who knows!
