Picked up a kindling cracker at a garage sale today. I already have a homemade 4 way that I really like but I am a sucker for firewood tools and the price was right. Also included, a small Craftsman sledge hammer that will become a smithing tool. The blade of the cracker is sharp with no nicks and the unit splits well. Don't know what I will do with it, probably sell the cracker in the fall. For $10 I don't think I will get hurt.
Uhhhh.... crack kindling? I bought one for Mrs. VW, but I think it needs mounted to a solid round for maximum effectiveness.
You such a funny guy EricI have cracked a bit with it and it is pretty nifty, I just like mine better. I agree it should be mounted on a round unless doing very light splitting but that is the way it came. As an aside, the backstory on the gal that invented it down under is pretty interesting. Check it out at Kindling Cracker™ | The world's safest wood chopper.
Nice find. I made a homemade version myself ( was bored one day at work ) , I came out super nice and works great but I have only used it a couple times. I can see how they are useful from the safety side of things but I find the good ole" hatchet works much faster and easier for me. Hey for that price I would have grabbed it too. With so many firewood tools and toys one more can never hurt.
Here is the one I made, it is now mounted on a good size round to get it up off the ground and keep it stable. Works just fine.
He makes her split the wood too. Becky is 1/2 of the splitting crew and Julie is the other 1/2 i have been trying to keep up with at the GTG’s
I remember when the young lady first made the prototype and posted it (can't remember exactly where) but was a little taken aback at the proposed price. However, a good piece of kit sometimes can be a little dear and I am hoping she made enough off the design to at least give her (and hopefully others) motivation to keep out of the shopping malls. I unfortunately, am broke flatter than ### on a plate (retired on a pension) so I had to improvise. I use a 8" block as a splitting block and "baton" a large super cheap fixed blade knife to split blocks into kindling. Way better than trying to split kindling with a hatchet and I get to keep all my fingers.
