Been eyeballing this pile of logs for a long time now (a month?) and it hasn't been touched at all this entire time. 2 blocks away at the private school, visible from the street, right next to a gravel driveway that connects a field to a parking lot. Doesn't get much easier than that. Tree company cut the logs but left them piled up there so I went there today and got permission from the groundskeeper. I had gotten permission to go way back before March-2020 (before I got my truck because I did that scrounge with my Sienna!) and just wanted to make sure it was still ok. He gave me the green light. The long one was tulip poplar. Took all of that but one piece. Then there were several nicely spalted ash logs - one about 20" DBH and the other a bit smaller. Took most of those. Took the entire pine log. It was super humid and I was drenched about 30 seconds in. But being 2 blocks away it was a quick in and out scrounge. The pieces I left were all knotty and I really don't have much space left. So higher standards it is! This was after the first load. I didn't take a pic after the 2nd load.
Thanks! It might be! I haven't split it yet and I could barely see with the sweat pouring all over my glasses. I'll let you know when I split it. I left the stumps there. I went back this morning and cleaned it up. Raked the sawdust, gathered all the bark that had fallen off the poplar and the ash, and blew it clean using the leaf blower. Easy - that's how I like it! Here's some pics of the clean up. First pic shows what I left behind. When I went to the dump I saw this buZZsaw BRAD .........I didn't take any.
Those aren't even stumps in the ground. They already flush cut them and moved them there. I have to watch the girls alone today so maybe I'll go back Saturday but probably not. Also that one stump looking one had a bit of dry rot on it and was not very heavy at all.
It has a pleasant smell i cant describe. Texture and weight similar to sassafras IME. https://photos.app.goo.gl/1Gt3dCQRxkahz5dW7 Having problems with adding pic. Load of catalpa in my PU. Note: one red cedar round far right. Notice heartwood color. Your wood came from a huge tree.
Excellent! Knots may not split pretty or stack easily but they do burn a lonnnnggg timeāEven soft woods like pine.
Not sure about that. Norway that I've ever seen is always white meat throughout with a thin brown center line. The texture of this wood is very different. Although maybe the spalting has affected it, maybe it's a hybrid because the bark looks like Norway but the meat does not. I found a piece of Norway at the dump and this is what I'm used to seeing. Also the tree guy said the other wood is mulberry. Never had that before but all those pieces were way short so I probably won't go back for it. I went back to get one piece to split.
Mulberry great wood and rare scrounge for me. The wood will gradually turn to deeper red to brown. Pic from December. Half cord all mulberry. I had thought of it being mulberry as its a rare tree around these parts...especially one of size. It spits a lot when burning though. Ive seen Norway with larger brown heartwood. From a wound area similar to red maple.
I got around to splitting that small score today and you are correct. It is Douglas Fir. Smells and looks just like a 2x4!
