Summer 2008, I started clearing around an old 1800s stone foundation with the idea that someday we might build a cabin there. It was on a small 8 acre lot our family had owned for over 150 years. A couple of 16" trees were growing inside the foundation. They were cut along with about 2o trees toward the mountains, to start a clearing. I'd made a claw for my tractor and it came in handy picking up all of the trees and stacking them out of the way. That was just a small start to the wood cutting needed. I had the old foundation back filled with gravel and it sat for 3 years before we built on it. We used it for camping. We had a camper and tents and a portable (tent) outhouse. I'll post pics of the clearing & camping, and then the different build phases that went from June until October 2011. Not sure I'll get em all posted tonight. My honey just got back from grandbaby sittin.
The concrete pads and floor framework. All pieces were pre-cut and assembled on site. All of the weight of the cabin sits on 24 pressure treated 2x10s as jacks under the 3 carriers.
Nice! Looking forward to the rest of this thread! Love the pics so far!! Beautiful place for a cabin!
Porch floor framework & decking, main floor 2x8 tongue & groove. Finally ready for walls. View attachment 19693 Only got one coat of Thompson's down but glad we had at least that. Got rained on a few times before the roof was done.
Rafters. Bought 4"x6" beams from a log home company and trailered them home for pre-cutting. Making pattern. On site putting them up with the 2x4 perlins. Roof still leaked a little...
Roof boards & Typar... finally had some rain protection. We were feeling good about our progress but there was a lot to do and it was time consuming stuff.
A lot of work and planning. Did you have an generator on site or was all the cutting down at home? You are going to post a pic of the great view from there?
Gable end upper walls, windows & doors. Made the doors at home first. Leaves were changing and we were getting tight on time.
We were into October. It was getting cold. My son was available for 2 weekends in a row so I stayed at the site all week and made porch rafters ahead, along with a couple beds. Got REALLY lucky when friends were available to put the metal roof on. It was a 10 day stretch that was mighty good getting it all done. First 8 days...
Final 2 days was... a lot. Snow was on it's way. Had to call in reinforcements for the metal roofing. My son did all of the high stuff and he was toast by the time he headed home... with a big smile. We had to get the entire roof framing done and strapping too, in one day. Second day, friends came and screwed the roof down while I sent sheets up to them with a rope. Pics don't do this justice... shoulda seen the ole fat man sweat... Here is the cabin this last winter with lots of snow. Son went for a snowshoe trip in for lunch to check it out with his 2 huskies. Hope it wasn't too many pics. I've left out hundreds... We'd like to spend more time up there this year. Moving last year used up all of our time.
