We are building a new house in the woods. A typical 3.5 acre building lot at the back of a typical subdivision with an additional 40 acre lot that borders several thousand acres of timber company land. The land is nothing special other than being relatively isolated for a subdivision lot, no views just wooded, there is a small stream that crosses at the very back. We looked at a lot of property and settled on this one as it is isolated enough for me yet not too far off the beaten path for my wife. The previous owners used it as camping/hunting land. They had a rough drive to a small clearing and a well. We decided we liked that spot to build on and are planning to use the existing well. The tree clearing started this week.

Some before pics and a video.

I did this back in 2000. Started with a 9 acre parcel backed by 1000's of state/county land. Lots of hard work but worth it in the end. Good luck to you and don't forget to have some fun along the way.

Cool stuff Dave. I'm guessing a snowblower is in the plans, if you don't already use one? Looks like a nice secluded spot. Looking forward to your progress pics... :ithappened:

Very nice. The woods look very similar to where my brother lives in Ellsworth. Lots of evergreens.

    Good luck with build.

Ah...don't want to give the wrong impression here, as much as I would like to do at least some of the work myself, it's just not realistic...we are contracting out every aspect of the build, it's just a small simple ranch in the woods.

The Hounds are wicked excited:thumbs::picard: 20180523_062529.jpg

I've got a lot of things on the plans list, A small tractor is high on the list, hopefully sooner than later, the drive is about 550 ft.

We went with a stick built modular, should be quick, could be August but likely September, depends on the site work, there is a lot of ledge on the land, we are hoping not to have to blast:makeitrain" , the goal is to have the front porch of the house as close to grade as possible to avoid steps into the house, the builder has 60 days from the set date.

What a nice private spot you have! The trees remind me of what I see in Canada..

Are you going to have a woodstove this go around? What about your huge woodstack hoard and woodshed at your current house?

I'd make the mover move the splits.... :)

What a silly question:D...of course we will have a wood stove, in the insulated basement.

Our current house with the huge woodshed is now a rental, no wood heat allowed for the tenants, I removed the wood stove, the plan is to move the stash from there to the new house as needed until I can establish the hoard at the new place. I'm having the tree clearing guy leave all the logs:D. There are some pretty huge white pines coming down, I've got a friend with a tractor and a mill, he might come take some and give me some lumber in trade.

    Congratulations DaveGunter!!!
Looks beautiful.. 2 pieces of advice walk out basement if you can.. And in building, find a way with ducts and fan to get air from basement to upstairs. Cheap a.c. in summer.

    Great job keeping hounds happy!!

We love it Dave! Just looking at the pictures and the video makes us feel right at home. We can share in your excitement too remembering many moons ago when we finally moved into our place in the woods. We absolutely love it and you will too.
